Not An Easy Noob Question (Elder Requested)

Protection of Jerusalem says "When you discard an Assyrian"

Does winning a battle on offense against an assyrian via numbers trigger that?
Does losing a battle on defense with an assyrian trigger that?

This is a good question.  I use this in my silver/pale green deck because I assume I get this consolation prize when one of my own Assyrians hits the discard pile.  I did not think that it worked if I played something that would cause someone else's Assyrian to get discarded, because it is their card and they are discarding it.

Now I'm not so sure anymore.  Does "you discard" mean you are physically putting it in the discard pile, or does it mean when you do something that directly causes and Assyrian to get discarded by its owner?

EDIT: I would say the first situation is yes and the second is a definate no. Not sure of the first though.

ive always taken it to mean that whenever you do an action to discard an assyrian you get to discard an evil card, meaning if you discard your own or discard an opponests via ability or numbers you activate PoJ.  i would say that your assyrian dying by the numbers in battle doesn't trigger it because it is your opponent causeing the assyrian to be discarded.  i cant think of any rulings that support this question either way, this is just my 2 cents

Yeah, we need to know if it means "you are causing an Assyrian to be discarded", or "you place an Assyrian on a discard pile" (from play), or even both.

Based on a ruling from a long time ago on I am Justice (a silver Covenant from Angel Wars, and I'm not looking for the thread because it was a very long time ago) if you discard an Assyrian in battle by numbers it triggers because a card you control is doing the discarding, but if one of yours dies from battle against an opponent by numbers you don't get to because your opponent is in control of the card causing the discard.
If you are reading this signature, thank a physicist.

I imagine it'd work like Tartaros*, which as far as I remember does trigger on characters being discarded by the numbers as well as by a special ability or defense reduction.

So if I'm playing Assyrians, and I activate Prot of Jerusalem, I can't use its ability everytime I put one of my Assyrians on my discard pile (from play)?

If not, why not?  My opponent may have played AOTL on it, but I am the one physically discarding it from play, aren't I?

Angel of the Lord aka your opponent is discarding your character and you are  moving it to the right destination.

Protection of Jerusalem says "When you discard an Assyrian"

Does winning a battle on offense against an assyrian via numbers trigger that?
Does losing a battle on defense with an assyrian trigger that?

Part 1: Yes, if you are attacking with a Hero that you own. The Assyrian is discarded as a result of your Hero's strength, so it is your card that discarded him. If you don't own any Heroes in battle, I might argue otherwise, but I'd definitely say yes if your own hero is in battle.

Part 2: No. The Assyrian is discarded as a result of your opponent's Hero's strength, so it is his card that discarded him.

I agree with both above me.  Simply moving the card to the discard pile does not appear as a logical trigger because how else is the card going to reach your discard pile, magic, teleportation?  The player using PoJ must be the one causing the discard, not physically moving the card to the discard pile.

Thanks.  I do wish it said "you cause an Assyrian to be discarded" though rather than "you discard and Assyrian", but this is a technicality.
