Duplicates? Here we go again...

If I have Moses in my territory and attack with a white hero can I play Transfiguration to fetch another Moses and put him into battle? I don't completely understand the duplicates in play definition. Just wondering if anybody does understand it.

You can, but you have to discard one of the Moses cards. Just one of the two.

If a character is generic, for example Wandering Spirit, then you can have two or more of them in your territory at the same time. But if a character is unique, like Moses, then only one of them can be in play. An opponent can have Moses in play but you can have only one. You could put Moses into battle but then have to discard one of your Moses's

What if I've got King Saul (Hero) and King Saul (EC)?  Also, what happens when the EC is converted?

Quote from the Redemption Rule Book Pg 7 lower right hand corner

"You may not have character cards with the name of the same person in your territory, set-aside area or in the field of battle at the same time.

Pg. 10 Example: You may have more than one Moses in your deck or hand, but you are allowed only one Moses in your territory or field of battle.  Something could happen in the game that would cause you to haveing two cards named Moses in your territory or field of battle, If it does you must select and discard one of these cards. Also, you cannot band in a character with the name of the same person as a character already in the field of battle

there is another example on generic if you keep reading

Actually,if you have a moses in territory then you CANNOT search for another one in your draw pile.  An opponent can force to use a character you already control (and thereby force you to choose one to d/c) but you cannot force yourself to add a second copy into battle.  If moses is paralyzed in your territory (such as with the Pale Green panic demon),  you cannot play transfiguration, search for another copy of moses and d/c the paralyzed moses in your territory.  In that situation only Elijah would be able to join the battle.  Moses would not be available to choose/target.

This is why I ask. This thread, http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=21044.0, makes me think you can fetch Moses. However, I have seen no definate answer.

This question has come up multiple times, and each time I remember the answer being that SA (even ones used by you) are never target-restricted because of the Duplicates-in-Play rule, you just can't willingly drop one into your territory from hand during prep or Discard phase. Yet somehow, someone else always seems to remember it differently.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

If I could make a suggestion, i would declare that only one unique character could be in play anywhere at a time and if another one was place into play then both would go to the discard pile...

Actually there were several elders and REPs who posted in that thread.  However I don't think any of us were elders back then.  It does seem like there are some different ideas there.  This is probably another good one for us to discuss over on the other side and then come back with a solid answer for you.

i believe crustpope is right, you cannot create a situation where you have 2 copies of the same unique character in your territory.

Really?  I dont see that as a problem because no single person is controlling both characters.  I think someone rogered you on that play.

I believe there is a rule that the same unique character cannot be in battle against itself.

How does duplicateness work with face down? Lots of time I'll put something in The Darkness then forget about it.... but I was told I can't have an Uzzah in The Darkness and territory at the same time.

If thats true, I'm going to stop using The Darkness, too confusing..... can't remember whats in there.....

You can have the same unique EC in The Darkness and in territory. From the REG:

Cards that are placed face down are considered out of play.  Only special abilities that specifically target “face down” cards apply to cards that are face down.

I know I've heard both sides on the issue of face down. I'm fairly sure that if someone is face down, you can't have another copy of them in play.

Think about what you imply with that quote adotson, out of play includes set aside. I know for a fact you can't have one unique character in your territory and set aside.

I agree with this but at the same time I wont jump all over someone if they happen to get it wrong. especially since I have made this mistake before...at Nationals no less.

Even if it is face down you cant have another copy of a unique character.  but this is on the honors system until you reveal it so  I gues sjust dont reveal it while the other copy is in play!

I agree, I wouldn't be hard on someone at all for it. It's an understandable mistake because it's not terribly clear until you ask an official.

Is it against the rules for me to right a note and remind me what character is in there? :P. Normally I'd just reveal it, but that ruins my surprise factor.

You can peak at your own character all you want..you just have to remember to do so. so writign a note is kind of against the general idea if they an just read your note to know who is facedown..

I'm allowed to look? Woah, thats news to me.... I guess that I just assumed that "face down" didn't mean "you can slant it for a second" :P.

(And as for a note I meant fold it up or hold it or something, so no one can see it.)
