I dont know of any rule that says you cannot peak at what you lay down in your own territory, especially if it is keeping you from accidentally breaking a game rule.  How many times to people look through their aritifact pile..even during another phase of the game, just to remind themselves of what they can activate to coutner something.

I don't see anything wrong with looking at face down cards. I did find confirmation that you can not have a unique EC in territory and face down.

Duplicate Cards
No player may control duplicates of a unique character or cause them to fight each other. This includes unique characters in play, in battle, in a side battle, face down, or in a set-aside area.

Great find Adotson.

I've always assumed you can't look at face down things. Face down is not revealed, to you or any other player, and no ability is allowing you to learn of it.

I'd also like to point out I (try to) only look at my artifact pile during my prep phase or when an ability lets me, unless I'm really tired and have no idea what is going on. A lot of times that does effect the game due to Uzzah (moreso in T1 than T2). ;)
