Does a dominant have to have a legal target to play it? If there isn't one can you still pick up the dominants like you used too or is that no longer a rule.

I had a Vain Philosophy played against me when I had an active Simon the Zealot resulting in a dominant played to no effect at nats. A judge was called over and it was ruled the Dominant could be played at any time even w/o a valid target.

As far as I know people have played grapes while in prep phase in order to get cards out to try and mayhem into SoG/NJ

I recently played Falling Away without realizing that I had Lampstand of the Sanctuary active. I was pretty sure it was a legal play, just a rather stupid one, so it stuck.

You can play a Dominant at any time. It may or may not take effect based on it's ability and whether or not there are legal targets.

"Dumping Dominants" is part of the strategy I've implemented with a Zebulun based offense in order to win free Lost Souls.

As far as I know it is a legal play and the rules say it would be wasted. Although, in my group, in our friendly matches we don't begrudge each other a mistake outside of tournament play. But then, we're less competitive than most of you lot

I know that I've seen a player play NJ without SoG in multiplayer so a different player could underdeck the soul that underdecks if opponent plays a good dominant, to prevent a winning rescue.

I also know that a certain national champion as my teams partner played his New Jerusalem from hand when he lost his Son of God to get his hand size down instead of just discarding it. The problem arose in that since he technically played it, I couldn't play New Jerusalem with my Son of God because our team had already played NJ.
