Scenario:  Opponent blocks with EC from hand and has initiative.  I feel I have a good chance of winning the battle without using AOL yet, so I let opponent play an enahcement.  He plays something that will remove my character from battle.  I'm pretty sure I can't just play AOL at this point AND also be allowed to rescue the Lost Soul.  But can I at this point play one of those "Interrupt the battle" enhancements, followed by Angel of the Lord, AND be allowed to rescue the Lost Soul?

Is the answer any different if the same things happens when defending, and I interrupt and then play Christian Martyr on the rescuing hero?  Does my EC live in that case?

Thanks.

Short answer: It doesn't work.

Explanation: Let's say the interrupt the battle card says, "Interrupt the battle; you may play an enhancement card." The interruption lasts until the full special abilities are carried out - in this case, after the next enhancement card resolves, if one is played. If you do not play an enhancement card, then the interruption does nothing. Dominants must be played after instant abilities resolve. So once you play Angel of the Lord, you are in essence saying you're done with the "interrupt the battle" enhancement, and the interruption is gone. Then the previous ability - the one removing your Hero from battle - completes, and your Hero is gone. Angel of the Lord can now occur, and the EC is discarded, but at that point your Hero has already lost, and no soul is rescued.

Hope that made sense. I can try to clarify further if that's too confusing.

+1  with Tim (who finished posting as I was midway through)

Probably not:  Special Abilities must complete first.  If your SA doesn't stop their EE then you AoTL will not either.

What if you interrupt immunity long enough to AOL the EC?  Any different?

AotL doesn't care about no stinking immunity.  It axes who he wants when he wants (except for a couple of ECs).  Immunity doesn't need to be interrupted to discard them with AotL

It's certainly not a dumb question. In fact, years ago, this very move could have been done, to the best of my knowledge. The ability to play dominants in the middle of card resolution was present before. Back then, if you threw down your Christian Martyr fast enough, Ethiopian Treasurer couldn't play an enhancement after being in battle, Gabriel couldn't search your deck, or Simeon couldn't band. This was changed partially to make cleaner rules, and partially to eliminate "slapjack" situations. One other result of the change was this very situation - playing a dominant under the "umbrella" of an interrupt cannot be done with any current cards.

Then I'll be brave enough to ask one more :)  What if I played a "negate" of his enhancement, rather than interrupt.  As of that exact moment, I'm not being discarded right?  Can I then really quickly play AOL, or do I have to provide him the chance the negate the negate and/or play another enhancement?  I guess what I'm asking is, once enhancements start being played, at what point can you play AOL AND rescue the lost soul?

You can play a dominant whenever there's no active instant ability that hasn't been resolved. In your case, you can negate whatever is removing your Hero from battle, and since every instant ability has resolved (nothing is "pending"), you can drop Angel of the Lord, likely resulting in you getting a soul.

Between the Enhancements, either of you can play a Dominant as you wish.  In fact, you each must give each other the chance to do so during the initiative check, before the next Enhancement is played.
