Discarding top card of deck if it is a lost soul?
« on: October 01, 2010, 08:07:37 AM »

I noticed that in later sets the cards that discard someone's top card of deck say "unless it is a lost soul".  For the cards from earlier sets that do not say this, is it still IMPLIED that if it is a lost soul it goes into territory?

I ask this because it seems there is enough deck manipulation out there now that someone could strategically have their own lost souls discarded, and perhaps even not having enough in their deck for them to win.

Thanks.

Nope, It's not still implied. For cards like Stronghold in the Desert, Evil Spawn (Gold) and Jephtah, if you hit a lost soul, it stays discarded.

Of course there are counters to this strategy - Crumbs from the Masters Table can get a lost soul back, The Thankful Leper can always search them all out, I think there are one or two enhancements that can get them back. And in order to actually make it work you have to hit 2 souls, 3 if they stop burial with Lampstand, more if they have cards like TAS or Malchus.

Thanks.  I agree with most of what you say, but you may not need to do it quite so often to lock someone out.  If they are using priests they cannot get Female Only LS (and often not NT only either) without I am Salvation or Exchanger.  If they are using Genesis or Judges then again NT only is a problem for them.  But I agree that a well-prepared player knows these weaknesses of his deck and plans accordingly.  I'm not sure if anyone has ever tried this strategy of discarding their own lost souls before, but I do remember a game where an unfortunate Evil Spawn block by ME locked me out of getting 5 lost souls.

The strategy was found mainly in combo decks before TAS and Hopper really started to find thier way into decks. Any deck that is using this as a strategy really either needs to commit the cards to it, meaning that it'll be a weak D otherwise, or have it as a sparing option, which means its not going to work in more than 5% of games. The Female/N.T. argument was a good one back in this strategies hay-day, but now with the FBTN soul, in addition to all the other ways around them, the prevalence of disciples, and TGT females I don't find those souls nearly as useful. plus since you don't get to choose which soul gets discarded frequently you'll hit one of those two souls.

I like John (promo) as well and with cards like Susanna and Divination you could set up some nasty discards. Sog/NJ can take out two more. The FBTN ls can actually help you as well as I am Salvation in that they negate Hopper. Anything else? Sites maybe? Golgotha/DoU abuse, Hormah?

FBTN ls

SoG
NJ
Burial

I am Salvation

John (p)
Susanna
Jephthah

Evil Spawn
Divination

Exchanging lost souls with opponent and the returning it to your deck, like that babylonian guy and then DoU or Hormah to return THEIR lost soul to THEIR deck while yours is still in their land of bondage
If you are reading this signature, thank a physicist.
