Does the term "discard" by default mean "from play"?

Certain fortresses immediately come to mind, but this could apply to vague artifacts/enhancements/characters too.  If a card does not specify WHERE it is being discarded from, can it be from hand?

For example, for Potter's Field, Tartaros and Chamber of Angels, they seem to just talk about "if your character is being discarded", but it doesn't specify "from play"?  Can I choose to discard one from my hand to go to the fortress?  If not, why not?

Are there other cases you can think of where maybe a discard requirement can be met by choosing to discard it from your hand?

Thanks for helping me understand this.

A popular combo that works is discarding an angel from hand with that I Am card, sending it to Chamber of Angels, and getting to discard an evil card from opponent.  Then you keep doing it.

"When discarded" or similar phrasing means discarded from anywhere, whether it be play, hand, deck, or set-aside. As long as it was taken from it's location and placed in the discard pile, it was discarded. If it says "discarded from hand/battle/play/deck etc." then only that specific case works (obviously).

This is different then when a card says to "discard" something, when the default IS in play, and you can only discard out of play things when the discard card says so specifically.
