So you mean like if a certain ability on one card required a different card to be the discard pile in order to work? That could certainly make a difference, but there's really no advantage since your opponent could do the exact same thing.
This thread is extremely old and began a discussion by the elders and Rob way back when this took place. At that time we decided the players can perform any legal "discard phase action" in any order they choose. That ruling still stands to this day.
