If Deafening Spirit is discarded via Gates of Hell, does it go to my territory?
The Gates of Hell (TP)
Type: Fortress • Brigade: None • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: At any time, you may discard the bottom card of deck. If it is an orange demon or a Lost Soul, place it in your territory instead. You may discard this card to add your demon to the battle.

I have been told at least once (one of these times at Nats) that Deafening Spirit is not considered a demon until he is a character.
-
So identifiers are not active at all times? That would seem to contradict the current ruling.
-
Only characters have character identifiers.
-
Seeing as the new REG doesn't have an entry for identifiers (unless I missed it), there isn't any way to know that there is a difference between identifiers, in which case I posit that the ruling about all identifiers being active at all times should apply to, well, all identifiers, unless I'm remembering that ruling incorrectly.

Deafening Spirit is not a demon until it's special ability is activated in battle.

If it did go to territory instead of being discarded, what would it do there?
I don't think it would be discarded, but you couldn't use it for anything.
-
You could add it to battle by discarding Gates (if it fits "orange demon" for the instead, it would also fit "demon" for the add to battle ability), or you could put it in your hand with Abe's Kid. Several options.

I know this has been the ruling in the past, but I've always been less then convinced. The REG does list Deafening Spirit as a Demon, but it also says that "One possible role of a character is Demon (see Character’s Role and Gender) is demon." I can see the logic either way, but I would rule the way it's been ruled in the past.
