If a card with a search deck ability does not have a "may", are you still required to carry it out if you know you don't have any correct targets left in your deck?

For example, do I need to search my deck every time I put Salome into battle even if I already have my TGT and I don't have any covenants? Is it basically a free shuffle?

Search deck for The Garden Tomb or a N.T. Covenant and put it in hand. Hero ignores Evil Characters holding weapons.

i believe so. furthermore, you would have to show your opponent your deck to prove you do not have anymore covenants or tgt still in deck.

I asked this during Nats and basically was told "it doesn't matter" so I would definitely be interested in the answer.

Do you have to play an enhancement? It doesnt say may...

Im just curious as to what the difference is between the two?

All play enhancement abilities are may by default, according to the REG

cool. I would still rule the search is not a may and that the deck would at least need a shuffle.

If a search ability is not optional then you must carry it out. If you don't find the card type you're searching for you are not required to reveal your deck. I think MKC might have confused that with the rule for discarding a specific card type from hand. However if you believe your opponent has the card they searched for but chose not to "find" it you're welcome to call a judge and ask them to search the deck.

Often, during tournament play people choose not to search even though it's not optional, to save time and extra shuffling. Most opponents don't have a problem with this and even prefer it. But I guess if you wanted to make them search and shuffle, technically you could.

So technically you should search/shuffle every time, but most people don't care whether or not you do, I see....
