Custom Cards vs Tournament Legality

if say, I took an actual angel of the lord card...and glued a thin piece of printing paper to it depicting custom angel of the lord artwork, and had said card sleeved the same with the rest of my deck...would it be tournament legal?

I'd glue a picture of a sword to all my enhancements, so they're all depicting weapons.

Probably not tournament legal, but I'd bet if the host made sure there was no way to tell the difference between one or the other it wouldn't be a problem. It'd be up to the host/judge though.

I know a guy who made a custom SoG, and it was allowed at a tournament I attended.

but the Buckler already depicts a weapon. why would you want anything more?

you could ask Rob. MJB took Egyptian's custom Son of God to Rob at 08 Nationals, and Rob said it was fine. He also mentioned that the art failed to have a special ability of Son of God, so...

well, thats why i mentioned the part about gluing the custom art to an actual angel of the lord. even if your art doesnt depict the special ability, it doesnt change the fact an actual angel of the lord card is being played.

I have often wondered the Same thing my self.  Especially for booster draft.  I have been working on a custom lost soul and would love to be able to use it for booster draft.  It has no SA so I don't think it would be an issue.  If I allowed this at one of my tournaments, would I be derelict in my duty? ;)

At Nationals CA I had an entire deck made of custom boarderless cards, many contained the original artwork.  I asked Rob if I could use the deck for T1-MP but he declined because he wanted to be able to tell what the card was from across the table (he played T1-MP with us).

funny, you would think borderless cards would be better for seeing across the table, since the picture is way larger.

MKC, the legality of custom cards (custom artwork) is left up to the discretion of the tournament host/judge. Pretty much you just need to ask prior to check in, and if the host says you are good to go, you are good to go. (As Ring Wraith noted, I did have a quick discussion about this with Rob at the Columbus Nationals.) Note that the judge is clearly within his rights to say "No" to your request. So if he does say "No" you really should just accept it without complaint or protest.

Egyptian has a number of custom dominants (SoG, etc.) that he has made using Orthodox ikonography, and they look incredible. They are so amazing it almost makes me wish Cactus would devote a set just to reprints with art upgrades.

FWIW, at tournaments I host/judge I do allow players to use custom art cards on Dominants and non-SA Lost Souls. Any of the other cards would be too distracting/confusing to be acceptable (as Gabe mentioned was Rob's concern). Also the card would have to meet all the other standards for being considered playable in sleeve. You couldn't change the basic layout of the card. The artwork would need to be appropriate. Lastly, the card can't be to get you any form of in-game advantage.

This sort of thing opens a lid a prefer to keep closed.  For one thing, I have never allowed proxy cards.  i.e. "I can't get a Guardian of Your Souls so can I make my own?"  The answer has always been no.  For fun, I have let a few people change the art on a card they already owned and left it up to the local judge to allow but, I am not inclined to continue that practice and you must certainly own the card you are changing art.  You are never allowed to change the card function.

So, in summary, I wouldn't spend much time on this if you plan on using the cards in tournaments because the judge may not allow them and I am certainly not going to require that they be allowed.

If it is at all possible to distinguish between altered cards and standard cards, even through a sleeve, no judge worth their salt would/should allow them.

I used to mark my cards with Bible stickers in the lower-right corner of the card back.  Eventually I abandoned the practice, but over time I also had to go back and take the stickers off, because over time and shuffling, they would leave an impression on the back side of the sleeve, and you could tell some had stickers and some did not.

I have also had my deck questioned when the sleeves are two different styles of matte black.

i agree, i think extended art cards would be awesome as tournament prizes (vs system used to do this).

Just to be clear... I am in complete agreement both with all of the criteria Rob mentioned and with The Schaef's clarification.
