Cost/Benefit vs. ITB

Do you get the cost paid back if the benefit is interrupted?  Does it make a difference if the benefit is ongoing and other cards had been played?

The specific scenario was an Angel-Help from Heaven-Striking Herod against Elymas.  Other than Striking Herod being ITB, the abilities don't really matter, I think.

Egyptian Warden:
You may discard an evil gold Enhancement from hand to capture a human Hero in battle.

Elymas the Sorcerer (Di):
If blocking, you may discard a demon from your territory to protect your Evil Characters from discard and convert abilities on opponent’s cards.

yeah i'm going with yes here. if the ability is interrupted/negated then yes you get back whatever you 'paid'

the only gray area is when the ability is only interrupted .. in which case it could be construed that either the entire card or sentence's abilities are interrupted as the last ability or only the single ability within is interrupted. So the gray area is (using warden) "is only capture a hero being interrupted? or is the payment +the capture ability?" by for example, striking herod

by the current wording of special initiative i'm going with the entire card is suspended(meaning you would get back the payment), but apparently that is incorrect wording because special initiative is allegedly played as only suspending the removing ability itself, not the card like the reg actually says.. so

I've always played it as you get the cost back if it's interrupted (and subsequently negated/removed/etc), but that usually happens under special initiative.  The Elymas/Striking Herod situation came up today where the ITB was only targeting the ongoing ability, since another card had been played.

I believe if the cost gives a benefit that causes SI (Egyptian Warden), then the cost is undone.

Otherwise I don't think the cost is undone, such as the Elymas example.

I'm not 100% certain, but pretty sure that is how I've seen it played.

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

The cost is undone if it is undone by whatever card is undoing the benefit.

Otherwise, the cost is sunk.

For Egyptian Warden, it usually won't matter; EW usually causes SI, and an ITB ability will interrupt the last card played if it was used by an opponent.  This interrupts all of EW, and the discarded EE comes back.

For the Elymas example, the cost was an instant ability, so it is not undone by an ITB ability if you played Help From Heaven after Elymas activated.  The demon stays discarded.
