If I play Covering the Sacred Things on The Silver Trumpets...it can't be discarded...so what happens after the second use?

It protects from discard effect, not game rule.

Why? High Priest's Palace protects against discard by game rule. Why is Covering ... different?

i agree. discard is discard, no matter which way you slice it. covering would stop trumpets from being dicarded.

Even if it is protected from discard, its two uses could still be used up and afterwards would be useless even though it was still active.  It's not protected from having counters added.

It is not discarded.  But you can't use it again.  So the only benefits that I can see are:
1) fuel for Uzzah
2) more filler to keep the random artifact discarders from hitting your more important artifacts
3) if you shuffle your artifact pile, it will hit your deck and reset so you can use it two more times.

I asked the same question about KotW.  Why doesn't it protect ECs from the game rules (that says cards in a fortress are shuffled with the fortress) when someone plays ANB?  But I lost that discussion.  So just because HPP protects from a game rule, it doesn't mean that The Silver Trumpets does as well.

Mark, the KotW discussion is different because of one very important point: where would the protected EC go?  If it can't be removed from the fortress, then doesn't it have to stay on the fortress no matter where the fortress goes?  If not, then an opponent's card removed it from the fortress, which it can't do.  If the fortress is shuffled, does the EC hang suspended in the air for all time and eternity?

In this case, the Covering stays on the artifact, and the artifact can stay exactly where it is.

I would see two options.  The first is that the fortress is shuffled, but he characters stay where they were (in territory).  This would be akin to a person huddled under a tent during a storm.  The tent may blow away, but the person is still there.

The other option is that KotW could be treated similarly to characters like Michael.  Michael's special ability makes his enhancments CBN.  It has been ruled that Michael's character ability also therefore CBN because if it were than it would in effect make his enhancement negatable, which can't happen.  We could say the same thing about KotW.  If we decide that the ECs CANT be removed from KotW, and they are protected from effect, then that means that indirectly KotW would also have to be protected from effect while it had an EC in it.

Either one of these options would seem to me to be consistent with the way we treat other cards like High Priest's Plot and Michael.  Either one of these would seem to be preferable to our current rules on this issue.  But I also understand that you see it differently :)
