Choose the Blocker and Banding

If I make a rescue attempt with a Benjamin and am blocked by Lot’s Wife banded to Goliath, what happens when I play Obedience of Noah and choose Lot’s Wife to block again?

Choose the blocker causes both evil characters that entered the battle initially to temporarily leave while I choose which evil character is going to block me.  Lot’s Wife’s special ability already activated, so does it reactivate when she enters battle, or did I “waste” her special ability (keep it from happening in a sense)?  If it reactivates, is the holder forced to keep the same target (Goliath) or may the holder select a new target to band to?

---------------
Obedience of Noah
Type: Hero Enh. • Brigade: Blue • Ability: 1 / 1 • Class: None • Special Ability: Holder may choose the Evil Character that his opponent uses to block his rescue attempt.

Lot’s Wife
Type: Evil Char. • Brigade: Black • Ability: 3 / 3 • Class: None • Special Ability: May band with any Evil Character.

I would say that  you cannot choose Lots wife since she has already entered battle.  But if you could choose her, then her SA has already been activated and it could not be activated again.

The tricky question is does Lots wife return to territory after OoN is played or does she simply "scoot over" in the battle and become the lone fighter.  I am not sure about that.

The REG is pretty clear that I can choose Lot's Wife to block and that she does return to territory after OoN is played.

Instant Abilities > Choose Blocker or Rescuer > How to Play

“Choosing” the character means not choosing all the character(s) that are currently in battle; they all leave and are replaced by the character you choose.  Characters leaving battle may not return to the battle that turn with the exception that the choosing player may select one character just removed and put it back in battle..  The character selected can come from any territory in the field of play or from your hand unless stated otherwise.

This is a good question and came up in a game the other night that I was in.  The REG is clear about some things.

If you play OoN, then both Lot's Wife and Goliath leave battle.  You may choose to bring back in one of them individually, but whichever one you do NOT choose, may NOT reenter battle that turn.  If any enhancements have been played, then their SA do NOT reactivate in the new battle.

What the REG is NOT clear about is whether character SAs reactivate in the new battle.  One side could argue that if you chose Lot's Wife, that she could then band to another EC (besides Goliath) who had not been in battle yet.  (In fact, the example in the REG talks about Jacob banding to someone, however, it is also possible that Jacob was not one of the original heroes in battle in that REG example).  So you could also argue that her SA was already used and could NOT be reactivated (just like enhancements).  I don't think that the REG is clear on this.

Personally, we flipped a coin, and ended up playing that the character special ability did NOT reactivate.

Personally, I would rule it the same was as side battles are ruled. Character abilities cannot activate a second time when they go from the main battle to a side battle, so I assume the same would hold true for CTB.

Personally, we flipped a coin, and ended up playing that the character special ability did NOT reactivate.

Thats always a good way to solve a debate mid-game. RR and I have done this several times, lol.

I prefer to actually get a ruling from an Elder or at least a REP [Really Experienced Player] (ie. RDT, Lambo, RR, Kirk, Ben Arp, SoulSeeker, etc.)  However none of them were around at the time :)

I still think its kinda interesting how... despite never getting to play a single face to face game of Redemption, except maybe once or twice when I first got the game... people consider me one of the more experienced ones.

Maybe because I like to argue about the rules so much?  :D

Well, I'm not important, but I would interpret the other Default Condition for CtB as a definitive answer. Even though the beginning sentence refers to enhancements, I see no reason that it would not apply to characters as well.

Instant Abilities > Choose Blocker or Rescuer > Default Conditions

•      Enhancements still in battle that can be used on the chosen character are placed on the new character, the rest are discarded.  However, a special ability that has already been used cannot be used again.

Contraire, mon frère.  You are important to me, and I think you have as good a shot as anyone at being the host of Nats 2012.  That's pretty important :)

To my knowledge SA don't reactivate in a battle unless a negate or interrupt was played. I see neither here so I shall rule, they do not.

BTW, being no VIP, this ORP from RATS gives a big AOK to the TKVP.

Lol, isn't "The TKVP" redundant? :P

Related question: if they happen to choose your KoT (or other FBTN evil character) as the new blocker, what exactly happens?

FBN battle against just Lot's Wife!  ;)

That would be a fun scenario, with Benjamin having a certain special ability...

Just to clarify Kirk's answer (which is correct), KoT would enter battle, making the battle FBTN. However, this would negate the CtB, so Lot's Wife would return to battle, but her banding ability would also be negated. Since KoT's SA has not been negated, it remains (FBTN), even though the King is no longer in battle.

That would be a fun scenario, with Benjamin having a certain special ability...

KoT would not negate the CtB if it was an enhancement played on Benjamin. You would have a FBTN with a 1/1 vs. a 10/12. That would be even more fun!  ;D
