The no duplicate characters rule from the 3rd edition rulebook:
Quote
You may not have character cards with the name of the same person in your territory, set-aside area or in the Field of Battle at the same time.

What exactly does "You may not have..." mean?  Control?  Ownership?  Either?

Previous rulings (can't duplicate captured characters, can't band to someone you already have in play, etc.) imply control.  The only situation I come up with in which ownership is part of the equation is with an exchange (Seven Wicked Spirits).  If you put down the EC they exchanged for, it seems like they should still be able to block with the exchanged EC.

So I think the rule means you can't control duplicate unique characters.  So that seems like a legal play.  When the EC returns, you'd need to select one of the 2 to discard.

Sweet, good to know I played it legal.  It was a great way for me to discard my Naaman that Tyler had converted with Holy Grail after he successfully blocked my own CtB....  ;)

Not sure what you still want to hear, but here goes:

By using CtB, and bringing in Namaan from your hand, your opponent controlled your Namaan the moment it entered play. The fact that you already had a converted Namaan in play was irrelevant since you were not controlling the second one. Therefore, for the duplicate rule consideration, you controlled a Namaan and your opponent controlled a Namaan, but they were not both in Battle. This is fine.

Once the battle was over, the EC Namaan returns to the territory of the owner, which now violates the duplicate rule, so the owner chooses one to discard.
