So my brother plays Michael (AW). I lay down an evil character, then proceed to capture Michael. Can my brother play Burial to discard Michael, and then, on a later turn play a card to search his discard for him? Would he come back as a hero? Also, which discard pile would he go in?
I'd like to know asap. Thanks, Weston.

Cards that are discarded always go the discard pile of the player that owns the card.
In this example, your brother can play Burial to send Michael to his discard pile then use a card to retrieve him from the discard pile and he would come back as a Hero.

To expound:
Captured characters are treated as Lost Souls, that is why Burial can target them. Cards that are in the discard pile are reset to face value, unless they are healed before the end of the turn. However, I am not aware of any way to heal a captured character anyway.

This REG quote I just found contradicts the two posts above:
"Captured non-human characters are not Lost Souls. Rather, they are captured characters, which still retain their alignment (good or evil). Therefore, a non-human cannot be rescued and scored as a redeemed soul."
It seems Michael would not be treated as a lost soul, and therefore may not be targeted by Burial.

Interesting. I knew that you could not rescue them, but I never thought about the fact that Burial could not target them. It makes sense, I just never thought about it. It is so hard to capture non-humans anyway.

It was a change when they released the new rules, you could before:
So am I the only one who did not know that you can't redeem captured angels anymore? Or animals, for that matter? When did this happen? Normally these things make a small scene on these boards for a few weeks.
Before we released the PDF REG we went through everything and tried to make as many corrections as possible. There were also a few changes. You can find a list of those in the third post on this tread (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/redemption-official-rules/new-reg-pdf-file-at-cactus-web-site/).

Wait, angels can't be redeemed anymore? Good to know.

Actually, on a related note, are set-aside characters reset to face value upon return (aside from the benefits received from being set-aside)? I'm particularly wondering about whether any counters on them from before they were set aside would remain when they return.

Cards do not reset in Set-Aside, so yes they keep counters. Cards only reset in Discard Pile, Draw Pile and Hand. They may also reset in Land of Redemption, but I always forget about that one.
