Ruling on brass serpent

Say I am in battle with jacob banded to captain of the host. CotH gets martyred and I heal him with brass serpent. If at the resolution of the battle Jacob dies, does brass serpent heal him or does its effect only take effect at one instant in time?

I believe it is instant, which is why you should not play it til the end of phase, where it would heal any hero discarded.

Healing can occur at any time during your turn, and Brass Serpent's errata says "Heal all heroes in play," so I would rule that you could heal both heroes. You basically could heal them both at the end of the battle.

But if this were the case, at the time when jacob is defeated, captain of the host is in my discard pile. If I play brass serpent and captain of the host is healed, why not all my other heroes in my discard pile. When I was playing my dad I believe he ruled that brass serpent only heals the hero not at full strength at the time when the card was played and that its effect only lasted that instant, therefore meaning that Jacob dies. But I can't remember exactly how that went. Too bad he is sleeping right now...

From the REG:

Instant Abilities > Restore Life, Heal, or Release > How to Use

Healing cards may be activated on any character in play (e.g., territory) of matching brigade color.  They may target any card being discarded or subject to a poison or disease special ability, regardless of brigade color.  The healing effect is instant, not delayed.  You can play a healing enhancement at any time to restore a character sent to the discard pile at any previous time during the turn (e.g., Draw Phase or Preparation Phase).  The discarded character may come from battle, a territory, a set-aside area, or from a draw pile (e.g., Confusion).  Cards being discarded can be healed on the way to the discard pile.  Cards being discarded from anywhere may be healed at any point during that turn.  Characters discarded on a previous turn cannot be healed.  A healed card is immediately placed in the owner’s territory; they retain all their abilities.

So based on this ruling if we go back to my example...CotH and Jacob are both alive at the end of the battle, both having been healed by Brass Serpent?

I would say so. The REG seems to say so.

They are returned to territory, so the battle is not won by them. You lose the battle, but keep the heroes.

In your original example, neither Jacob nor Captain would be healed. Wait to play the Healing Enhancement until the battle is over.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

Oh...so let me get this straight. I just want to be sure. If i play brass serpent at the end of battle it will heal every hero that was discarded in that turn previous to when brass serpent was played?

No, during the SAME turn.

So, the following could happen:

You have deceptive sin in your territory (During that player's upkeep phase, he must discard a card from hand.). You discard hero A from hand.

You attempt with Jepthah and discard the top card of your deck. It is hero B.

You band in two other heroes (heroes C and D). Hero C gets Christian Martyr'd; hero D gets discarded by an evil enhancement. Jepthah then loses by the numbers and is discarded.

Brass serpent heals and puts in territory heroes A, B, C, D and Jepthah.

It's that good.

The reason it wouldn't work in the original example is that Captain is still Negating all Enhancements until Discard phase. If you played it then it would work.

He does? I was under the impression that ongoing abilities on characters like that default to the battle phase only, unless specified otherwise. For example, if elijah enters battle, when he enters territory after the battle, I understood that he is no longer protected from discard.

I agree that "Negate All" abilities on characters and enhancements end after the Battle Phase.

Isn't Discard phase the one directly after Battle Resolution (which you can't play any cards during)?

What is your point, exactly? You can play healing cards after the Battle Phase, at which time "Negate All" abilities are no longer active.

Um, you can play cards during the discard phase. Like characters into your territory, face down artifacts into your pile, fortresses, set asides, territory enhancements, and, you guessed it, healing cards.

I was questioning why people were questioning what Pol said, when he said the exact same thing as them.

The reason it wouldn't work in the original example is that Captain is still Negating all Enhancements until Discard phase. If you played it then it would work.

Also, I know you can play cards in the DC phase, I was saying you can't play cards during Battle Resolution.

So Brass Serpent heals any heroes discarded during the previous phases of the turn.  Does I am Healing work the same way?  It's worded very similarly.
