Title: Burial Shroud in Teams
Post by: ChristianSoldier on June 24, 2013, 11:18:09 PM
In teams, if I have Burial Shroud active, can my teammate make a rescue attempt?

Burial Shroud
Holder may not make a rescue attempt or be attacked. May be used twice.

Since artifact piles are not shared, and it refers to Holder (which I don't believe transfers), I think technically you are correct that your teammate could rescue.  They are not restricted at all by the card, unless there is another rule or ruling that changes that.

The ruling that was in my game was the same.

However, I believe this would also mean that your opponents could still attack, and you would be restricted from blocking.

I think the rule is that you always attack the person on your left and then they can choose to pass the block. I would think that the player to your right would not be able to attack and that their teammate would be able to attack your teammate and they could still pass the block to you.

Although you are correct that the person to your left has the first option to block, technically you are attacking the opposing team as a whole.  Therefore even if the person to your left has Burial Shroud active, you could still attack their team.  However that player would be prevented from blocking.

Conclusion: Don't play Burial Shroud in TEAMS :)

So how does it stop you from blocking if you have shroud up?

Because if that player chose to block, then they would personally be being attacked.  And Burial Shroud doesn't allow that.

Burial Shroud targets a "player" not a location.

I understand that it is a confusing card with regard to TEAMS, but this has been the way that Burial Shroud has been ruled for the last 5 years.  That's not to say that the status quo can't change.  However it would have to be a really compelling argument as opposed to just having a different perspective that "could" also be a valid way of looking at it.

I applaud both curiosity and logic :)

P.S.  I'm looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks at EC Regs :)
