Dead guy's abilities?

I read in another post where if you have say Jacob (who bands to silver) and Captain of the Host (BBTN except banding), and Captain is discarded the battle continues as a BBTN.  So my question is if the character's ability is not used as soon as the character comes into battle does the ability still work.  Some examples I can think of are: prevent next enhancement, draw a card for every enhancement played.

A card is not negated when it is discarded.  So, in your example, if you played that an enhancement that negated a hero's ability, and that card was only discarded, the ability still works.  The exception is if the card is negated and discarded.

If someone like John starts a RA banded to someone else, then John is discarded before a blocker comes in (say with Christian Martyr), the abilities of the blockers are still prevented because he was never negated.

You could also fix the last word - he was discarded, but he was never negated.
