I can't believe I don't know this already, but I read that people with large banding groups compliment those decks with a ton of negates.  I thought that you can't play a negate or interrupt until you have initiative though?  For example, if I band together 6 characters, and my opponent blocks with a 1/1 EC, can't he keep playing battle winners, knocking off my banded heros one at at time, because he still has initiative?  Or can negates/interrupts be played whether you have initiative or not?

Thanks for helping me understand "negate" better :)

You MUST have initiative when playing a negate.

You gain initiative if...
-You are "losing". You have initiative if you are being discarded, for example.
-A SA allows you to play the next enhancement. Words of Encouragement, for example.
-Initiative is passed
-Other I can't think of.

So if you attack with a band and they block and capture/discard/blah blah blah one of your characters, you can play a negate because you have initiative

I'm not quite sure that's right.

Example:
You RA Caleb (10/7) + Men of Judah (12/12) + Army of Simeonites (11/11) = 33/30
Blocked by my Leviathan (12/12)                                                          = 12/12

Say I discard Caleb with Nebby's Dream.  It's now 23/23 vs 12/12.  Since Leviathian is still losing it is still my initiative, correct?  You cannot play a negate if it's my initiative.  If I also kill off your Men of Judah, it's now 11/11 vs 12/12, thus your initiative, and you can negate one or both of the enhancements while you retain initiative.


Did I misunderstand something?

sk, you didn't miss anything.  I think Sauce oversimplified.

  Negates (or any enhancement in battle really) can only be played with initiative.
Initiative can only be gained by:
    1) losing by the numbers
    2) if opponent played the last card during a "mutual destruction" or "stalemate"
    3) losing by removal (of all the heroes or enough of them to drop your numbers below their numbers)
              ways to remove: 
                  a) capture
                  b) removal from game
                  c) discard
                  d) shuffle away
                  e) to set aside

I hope this is a bit more thorough and helps you stefferweffer.

Your right, I did over simplify. I think the easiest rule of thumb is "if your opponent's enhancements were to complete and you would no longer be winning the battle, you have initiative".

no, Rawrlolsause is on the right track.  You get init 2 ways, by numbers, or if you are losing the battle by a SA.  That means all the heroes are dying.

Exactly as I thought then.  Glad to see I'm not losing it then.  With this in mind it seems to take a lot of the power out of those mighty red banding chains, IF your opponent has a hand full of battle winners.  Before you know it you could just be donw to one or two heroes, with no ability to save your dying heroes.

I like picking apart those banding chains until they're down to one hero and then playing a Failed Objective/DoU/Just A Hireling-type card so they can't get their big heroes back. :)

 im new to the game and just got a starter deck yesterday. me and my lil brother are trying to figure it out. we have had alot of fun so far but have a few questions.

1. if you attempt to rescure a Lost Soul, and during that add enhancements, do you keep the enhancements if you win? or can you play them only a certian amount of times before having to discard them? same question with evil cards. do you keep the enhancements played? no matter the outcome?

2. after using a dominant, dose it return to your territory or dose it discard?(one time use kinda thing)

1.  Enhancements (good or evil) are discarded after used in a battle at the end of the battle.  There are some instances where the writing on the card changes this, but they typically go to the discard pile when the battle is over.  *One other exception:  If a Character with a shield has an Enhancement with a shield then you can choose not to discard it.*

2.  The same goes for dominants and defeated characters.  They all go to the discard pile when they have been played.  Characters must be beat/defeated in a battle before they go to the discard pile.

Some clarification to #1: the enhancement will stay on the character, it doesn't go back to your hand.

alrighty, thanks for clearing that up. had another question:

what dose O.T. and N.T. stand for? i see them on a few of the special ability's but dont know what it is. :-[
oh and what are some of the other abreviations? if you know a bunch of them and the meaning do you mind just listing them and what they stand for?

OT = Old Testament in the Bible 
NT = New Testament in the Bible

Each card as a reference at the bottom where they can be found in the Bible.  *Josephus references are considered NT for game playing preferences.*  There are cards that affect only certain testimonial characters.

On cards, I can't think of too many other abbreviations.  Most other abbreviations that are used....are only used on this site.  Let me us know if there are other abbreviations that you happen to see and we'll clear it up.

Yeah, when people are talking about ECs and SoG and DoN and JiP on the site, they are just abbreviating terms or card names.  Don't expect to see too many critical terms abbreviated on the actual cards, other than Old Testament and new Testament.
