Until they fix it, Asahel + ANB is currently a legal way to make two RA's in a row with the Thorns LS the first one would be automatically sucessful.  The second one could be CBN (pretty much) by playing Grapes on the EC used to block Asahel.

Not exactly.  Because of the pattern of players attempting to come up with ways to make multiple rescue attempts, either in one turn, or by taking successive turns (with ANB), we announced this rule last fall.  It can be found in the Official New Rulings (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=24490.0) thread.

If a player makes a successful rescue attempt, that player may not make another rescue attempt until each of their opponent's has had a turn.

So, to clarify, since the link you were pointing to here said that a change might be made but nothing was posted in there, are shuffle and return still the same or have they been split?

I don't know about the link but in the REG under shuffle you can find this:
Clarifications
 An ability that returns a card to deck and then shuffles the deck is a shuffle ability, not a return ability.
