Ark of the Covenant

A few quick questions.

1)  If I have Ark of the Covenant active and successfully complete a rescue attempt or battle challenge (i.e. the opposing evil characters were discarded in battle), does that still count as one of Ark of the Covenant's uses?

2)  Does Ark's ability target the evil character while it is still in the field of battle or after it has returned to territory?

3)  Can I use Ark's ability more than once per turn (by use of The Long Day)?

Ark of the Covenant - Artifact
Regardless of battle outcome, any Evil Character an opponent uses to block a rescue attempt is discarded at the end of battle. Limit Holder to two such discards per game.  Play As:  After your rescue attempt or battle challenge, discard an Evil Character that was used to block.  Limit two discards per game.
Epic pouting maneuver!

A) Yes

2)  Does Ark's ability target the evil character while it is still in the field of battle or after it has returned to territory?

A) not sure why this is important, but I am 99% sure it is while they are on their way back to territory AFTER the battle resolution

3)  Can I use Ark's ability more than once per turn (by use of The Long Day)?

A) with the long day I am pretty sure you could use it twice on the same turn since they are two separate battles, but you are still limited to only one d/c per battle.

I assume jtay is wondering if protection forts (Assyrian Camp, High Priest's Palace, etc.) would protect from AotC. I believe the answer is no, since I think the 'end of battle' clause refers to battle resolution, which takes place in the field of battle if I'm not mistaken.

You should probably wait until someone more well-versed in the intricacies of battle resolution comments, however, as it's always been a sort of fuzzy concept for me.

Think of it along the lines of "Discard the Evil Character 'instead of' whatever you were going to do with it."  So it gets discarded instead of returning to territory, for example.  Now, if it leaves the Field of Play, or is converted to a different type of card (convert, capture), then it cannot be targeted for discard because you no longer have that Evil Character in play to target.

Okay.  What if I make a rescue attempt with Ahimaaz and withdraw before an evil character is presented?  Will that also count as one of Ark's uses?

I'm not sure. I would say that Yes it counts as a use because it was active, but that  you dont get to d/ an evil character because there wasn't one in battle.

But I am not sure.  Characters like Ahimaz, Rhoda and the Spy make this difficult because those little peak-a-boo battles count as a RA for the purposes of Chariot of Fire but how can you d/c an evil charachter that was in battle if there was no battle?  So  I would say it uses up a slot oon Ark but makes it so that you cannot d/c an evil character.  But I am open to someone explaining it better than me.

It is used, but the card says two discards not two uses, so you could still use it twice more if no EC was ever presented.

How does that work if there was no battle and there were no EC's in battle?  Here is the Play as on Ark:

Play As:  After your rescue attempt or battle challenge, discard an Evil Character that was used to block.  Limit two discards per game.

Even the play has has the stipulation that an EC has to block and that the d/c is limited to an EC that blocks.  So how can you just arbitrarially d/c one interritory?

Ooh!  Good catch!  So would that mean that a use wouldn't be used up if I defeated evil characters in battle by regular means (as in question #1)?

It is used anytime an EC is discarded by whatever means (by the numbers or by special ability), or if the EC survives and would return to territory (i.e. is ignored, or defeats/stalemates you by the numbers). It is NOT used if the EC was set-aside, removed, converted (to a hero), captured, or otherwise leaves the Field of Play, as Schaef said.
