Are Multiple Simultaneous Set Asides Allowed?
« on: September 03, 2007, 02:09:46 AM »

Currently, according to the REG, "Moreover, you may use multiple set-aside cards on a character simultaneously."

In this post from July June, Rob wrote, "If I limit set-asides to one at a time, it will not take effect until after the National tournament in August.  Too many players are used to being able to stack set-asides on a character when they set the character aside.  I don't want to change it in the middle of state and regional tournaments.  Even so, be forwarned that the change is probably coming."

Quick (or possibly not) question--was this officially changed after Nationals?

I know that at nationals everybody was saying it would be changed afterwards. However, that was what I heard from people that weren't Rob Anderson, so I'm not sure.

It is still under review. It will be posted here soon. A rationale will be included with it.

The game rules currently limit any player to play one card at a time. Another card cannot  be played until the first has completed its full effect. This means you cannot play cards simultaneously, unless they state otherwise (e.g., New Jerusalem). Hence, you cannot play multiple set-aside cards at the same time.

There will have to be some changes to the REG, since some previous rulings now conflict with this. Thanks for pointing it out. The suggested changes will be posted soon.

hey,

Current game rules allow set-asides to be played outside of the field of battle. As this is an exception to the normal play of enhancements, could we simply add an additional exception to allow set-aside cards to be played simultaneously with other set-aside cards?

How does Kerith Ravine work then? Can I set somebody aside w/ Kerith Ravine then dump 3 set asides on him?

Does Water to Wine's SA allow you to place multiple simultaneous set asides on a single character?

Water to Wine: Holder may search draw pile for all blue brigade set-aside cards and put them in play.

FWIW, while I understand the rationale, I'm really not crazy about this ruling. I would prefer something akin to Gil's suggestion.

Yeah, how am I supposed to draw 11 extra cards before battle phase if I can't set my teal guy aside with Feast of Trumpets, First Fruits, and Pentecost all at the same time?

Good point Ben.  I really didn't feel strongly about this rule until you pointed out that it hurts Speed Decks.  Therefore I am now in favor of it :)

One set aside at a time.

Many speed decks don't use multiple set-asides FYI, so it doesn't really hurt them, but it might change a few of them a little.

I think you should only have one at a time, but Water to Wine is now weird

I agree, in that Kerith Ravine and Water to Wine should be considered exceptions to this.

Only cards that say "play simultaneous" can play simultaneous. Water to Wine lets you search, find, and play multiple set aside cards, but you choose the order they activate sequentially. You may activate them all on one character, but you must target a different character with each set aside card. Water to Wine also allows you to hold them in your hand and play them later because it includes the word "may".

So you can search for but not play one of the set-asides?

"May" allows you to do any of the abilities that fall under the "may" qualifier, including all, or none.

So if you don't have enough Heroes to use all the set-asides you pulled, just keep 'em and play the ones you want during your discard phase.  :)

But deciding to play the set-asides, you'd have to either play all of them or none of them, correct?

If you don't have enough Heroes for all of them, are the extra ones activated and then, with no one to latch onto, discarded?

I think it's currently ruled that can play as many as you want, but you don't have to play all of them.

I agree, in that Kerith Ravine

All Kerith Ravine says is...

"...Set-aside enhancements work in this Fortress."

It NEVER specifies how many. It doesnt say "Set-aside enhancement" only because that doesnt make sense gramatically. I dont know why you think this should be the exception... it never gives any hint to multiple set-asides... just my $0.02

Oh well, what one more (mostly) useless State Promo?   :(
