Can you bring back a DAC with EC and if so, do they have to come back as a hero?

Good question. Since "it" refers to a Hero in the ability, I would say it is played as a Hero.

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

And that's why you should never be a hypocrite.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

I'd like to revisit this question. Using King Saul as an example, Eternal Covenant definitely targets him as a Hero in the discard pile and puts him in play.

But when he's put in play, doesn't his identifier kick in, allowing you to choose him to be good or evil?

I can see both interpretations being valid, so I'm fine if that is the direction we take with DAC. My only concern is that with setting this precedent, we now have to be more cautious when creating DAC that are much stronger when they are ECs (such as King Abijam) since they are now so easy to recur.

After further review, the original ruling that Dayne made is correct.

Similar to how blocking with King Saul (CoW) from hand predetermines that he is an Evil Character (since you cannot block a rescue attempt with a Hero), searching for King Saul with Eternal Covenant predetermines that he is a Hero.

During our discussion this portion of the REG helped make Dayne and Justin's ruling clear to me:

Quote from: REG > Glossary > Identifier
Identifiers are also used as explanations for certain parts of cards, such as defining abilities or special abilities that have an X or a *, explaining how a non-standard card type is used, or to explain deck building rules that apply to a card.

Since a dual alignment character is a non-standard card type (having two icons that are at odds) the identifier doesn't "activate" when the character is put in play, it explains what you're to do with the card under normal circumstances (putting it in play from hand).

Can I also bring back Saul/Paul from discard pile as the converted version, Paul?

No, he is the grey no-SA EC Saul at face value, and can only be targeted as that in hand, deck, or discard.
