what if i were to be in battle with john and my opponent plays a card that kills me, could i use sons of thunder to take out their evil fortress (since im allowed to play a negate because my opponent is killing me) then play reach and AoCP to kill the EC?

That's a very good question and I'm about to post a thread about it that will probably rage on for many pages.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

i was always inder the impression yo could play as many cards that negated something when you were being killed.  another question in this line of thinking would be could you play an artifact killer on an EC that is being killed is the same way

you only can play something that negates the removal of battle.

That's not entirely true. It's perfectly legal to play Reach to interrupt your removal without explicitly having something in your hand to either directly or indirectly negate the removal in the hopes that you draw said negate.

What if u have James and John in battle, and well say a sad captures John. Are you allowed to interupt the capture even tho u still aren't losing the battle?

that's one that i really don't like but sadly no you can not play an interrupt or negate.

default targeting is in play unless the card says otherwise
An unanswered question is infinitely better than an unquestioned answer.

Yeah but then you are interrupting which is the first part of negate
