Another Fishing Boat Q
« on: September 26, 2010, 11:12:44 PM »

There seems to be a lot of Q about this card, here's mine: If I exchange for two of my opponent's disciples Ala Stalks O' Flax, can I put them in my Fishing Boat? Then, next turn, can I put one beneath my deck to use Fishing Boat's ability?

Fishing Boat (Di)
Type: Fortress • Brigade: None • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: Set this aside. Each upkeep, you may place a Hero from here beneath your deck to draw X or to give your disciples access to all Sites this turn. • Identifiers: Best Card in Disciples! • Verse: Luke 5:4 •

On a related note, if my opponent gives me a card Ala High Priest's Offer or Judas' Thievery, or if I take their card Ala Taking Egypt's Wealth, and play Mayhem, do the cards I take get shuffled into my deck? I guess what I really want is an explanation of what happens to cards that are taken or given; are they treated as yours until you use them? Are exchanged heroes considered yours? Answers please  ???
If you were to go on a trip... where would you like to go?

Cards always go back to their original owners' decks. This is a game rule that is not overridden by Special Abilities. Fishing Boat would put the Stalker beneath your opponent's deck.

Polarius is correct.

Additionally, if you discard any cards taken from an opponent they go to your opponent's discard pile.

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

Cards can never return to your deck or discard pile unless they originated from your deck. Also, there are some technicalities that make this not work:

First, the Holds identifier does allow you to place your opponent's Disciple in Fishing Boat. However, the identifier says that X=# of your Disciples here. Your = own and control, so Disciples owned by your opponent does not count toward X. Also, since you can't return a card your opponent owns to your deck, you cannot fully pay the cost to draw/give access. Therefore, the only thing that putting your opponent's disciples in the boat accomplishes is setting them aside.

FWIW, I don't think you can even put the card beneath your opponent's deck with Fishing Boat. It says your deck, so I'm pretty sure you can't put it under either deck.

I think the precedent here is a banded in PAB who will let you search for a Generic Philistine, but he reverts to opponent's deck instead. This rule seems most similar to an "instead" ability, rather than a "protect" ability.

So, I could set them aside for the rest of the game?

I would rule that a stalksed hero in your boat is not targetable with the triggered exchange ability from the artifact because he is set aside (aka out of play)

however there are playtesters/elders who disagree with this ruling and a consensus has not been reached as of yet.

But PAB's ability is an exchange, not a cost/benefit. Since you cannot place your opponent's card under your deck by rule, I would say that you can't pay the cost to get the benefit. In PAB's case, you do the exchange, but then PAB is returned by rule to your opponent's deck.

Your post seems to contradict itself to me, but we may just have differing perspectives.

Hey,

"Place [target] beneath your deck."  Means "Place [target] beneath owner of [target]'s deck."  We say 'your' rather than 'owner' because 99% of the time the owner is you.  So if you exchange and gain control of an opponent's disciple you could put it into fishing boat and then place your opponent's disciple from your Fishing Boat beneath your opponent's deck to satisfy the cost of Fishing Boat.

Your
Several cards in Redemption® refer to cards that are “your” cards (e.g., your Priest, your Heroes, your demons, your warrior-class Evil Character, ). The possession and control of a card is implied by the use of the word “your”.

Several cards in Redemption® refer to your opponent. See Opponent .

So the REG is incorrect again? jeesh

so i can place my opponents hero in my fortress?

The Name of the Lord (AW)
Type: Fortress • Brigade: None • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: Set this fortress aside. If you have initiative, you may interrupt the battle and place your Hero on this fortress. Hero is protected from effect. Each time you rescue a Lost Soul, return one Hero to your territory. This fortress is protected from discard. • Identifiers: Play to set-aside area. • Verse: Proverbs 18:10 • Availability: Angel Wars booster packs (Ultra Rare)

I think what Tim is saying is more related to the deck specifically than just any use of your. "Your deck" means "[owner's] deck", etc. "Your hero" still means "[your owned and controlled] hero", I believe.

The REG isn't incorrect, it's just missing the second definition of "your."  That definition is only talking about your when it's used as an adjective describing cards.  "Your" has a different meaning when it's used to describe a location on the playing surface.

So you have to OWN the Hero card to put it into your NotL, or just CONTROL it, such as Stalks o' Flax?
I'm sorry I crammed 11 cookies in the VCR.

So the answer is yes... I just skimmed over it since I'm lazy.
