Title: Angel Under the Oak
Post by: The M on December 17, 2011, 04:30:48 PM
I was reminded of a question that came up at a recent tournament by this (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/ruling-questions/samuel-29064/).

Can Angel Under the Oak exchange for a character that is already in play and discard that character that they exchange for immediately?
It was ruled that I could by ProfA, Hobbit, and everytribe, but I'm just making sure that I can.

You're exchanging for who now?

Some random judge.

Why are we discarding?  Is this a unique character situation?

Yes. Aren't all Judges unique characters?

Yes, but I can have Sampson in my territory and exchange for him without discarding.  I guess I don't understand the question.

I believe his question was this:

Player 1 has Gideon in his territory. He then attacks with The Angel under the Oak and exchanges for a judge in deck. Can he exchange for another copy of Gideon from his deck and then immediately discard him?

I'm not sure why you felt the need to post another topic. My question is pretty much the exact same thing.

No.  You cannot use a SA to bring a new copy into battle.

The Angel Under the Oak (RA2)

Type: Hero Char. • Brigade: Silver • Ability: 8 / 8 • Class: None • Special Ability: You may draw 2 and exchange this Hero with a gold Judge in your hand, deck, territory, or discard pile. Protect Gideon from opponents. Cannot be negated. • Identifiers: OT Male Angel • Verse: Judges 6:11

Except if there is a may, then you may not. (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/ruling-questions/samuel-29064/msg454204/#msg454204)

Yes. The only time you are not able to create a duplicate unique character situation is in the case of banding, or playing from hand via game rule. Those are the ONLY exceptions.

I think 2009 is a good estimate of how long that's been the case officially. If it didn't make it into the new REG it should be there.
