Title: ANB and RBD/Gifts
Post by: jtay on July 16, 2009, 08:13:14 PM
If I have Gifts of the Magi active and play A New Beginning, will I get to draw 8 extra cards (16 cards total)?  My reasoning is that ANB shuffled Gifts but did not negate it.  What if instead I had Rain Becomes Dust active and my opponent played ANB?  Would they have to discard everything?

A New Beginning
ALL players shuffle ALL cards in the field of play, set-aside areas and their hands back into their draw pile. Only cards in Land of Redemption and discard piles remain. ALL players Draw 8 new cards. Holder may begin a new turn. • Errata: If making a rescue attempt, ALL players shuffle ALL cards in the field of play, set-aside areas and their hands back into their draw pile. Only cards in Land of Redemption and discard piles remain. ALL players draw 8 new cards. Holder may begin a new turn. [Note: The new turn begins when the new hands are drawn.]

Gifts of the Magi
Each time an opponent draws a card because of a special ability on a character or enhancement, holder may draw a card.

Rain Becomes Dust
All cards that an opponent draws because of a special ability used by that opponent are revealed instead. Place all revealed Lost Souls in opponent’s territory. Discard the rest.

No to both. If a card's removed from play (without being negated), it's effect fizzles at the end of that phase. ANB starts a new turn, thus it's no longer the phase the Artifact(s) was active in.

along these lines if I have RBD active and my opponent activates GotM then his cards drawn would be discarded, correct? This happened in a game yesterday and my opponent did not agree with me.

Was I correct?

Here is a simple way to check.

Did an opponent draw cards because of a special ability on their cards? If yes, those cards are discarded. This means cards drawn by an opponents Gifts are discarded.

Although Gifts is optional, so idk why anyone would ever use it while his opponent has RBD active.

Hey,

Although Gifts is optional, so idk why anyone would ever use it while his opponent has RBD active.

Because they had four Redeemed souls, Son of God in their hand, and there were no lost souls in play that Son of God could be used on. :D
