What happens here? Like, What even?

If i am not mistaken with a ruling in one of my games, foreign wives is protected from side battles. So Ambush doesn't work against her.
-
Ambush the City says:
"If making a rescue attempt, set all cards in battle aside (regardless of immunity). Holder may begin a new rescue attempt against same player. Once new rescue attempt is completed, the original battle resumes as a battle challenge. Cannot be negated. "
Since Foreign Wives is protected and not immune I would assume she isn't set-aside. So if she isn't set aside may I begin a new battle with her not in it? I would think she would return to territory right?
-
I think this was asked in the past, and iirc she stays in the field of battle but isn't part of the new battle you start (she's just kinda chilling there, but she's not in territory for things that could target her there). When the new battle ends the cards that were set aside rejoin her in the original battle which is now a battle challenge.
Not 100% sure, though.
EDIT: Here's Redoubter's take on it:
YMT, the rule I think you are referring to for #2 is that you cannot exchange for a card that exchanges for the same card in such a way that you can cause an infinite loop. I cannot remember the exact wording of the rule (or even where to find it anymore), but I know it was put in place due to infinite loop stalling potential.
For #3, I brought this scenario up awhile back (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/ruling-questions/fw-vs-atc/), and the consensus was people agreeing with this statement:
My contention would be that AtC could be played, with all heroes being set-aside while FW stays in play, remaining in the battle that will become a battle challenge. A new battle, separate from the one FW is in, begins and is a rescue attempt. Once that finishes, the heroes return and join FW in the original battle as a battle challenge.

This is how I would rule it as well.

It was ruled in my game the side battle did not trigger because she is protected from side battles, therefore ambush did not work and you could not even begin another battle. Clarification and a final ruling would be great since I was the one trying to use ambush.

I believe Browarod, Redoubter and Professoralstad are all saying the same thing. I'll confirm that as well. With 3 elders and an REP in agreement I think we can call that an official ruling.
-
Awesome! That helps. Thank you gentlemen.

Just to add clarification for why it works as it does, AtC is different than traditional side battle cards. Because of FW protection, it cannot target her, and it doesn't. However, it can target all other cards in battle with the set aside, so it does so. A different side battle card like Sword Against Sword cannot begin a new side battle with FW, because in order for it to work, it must choose two characters to move from the current battle to the new one, and since it cannot move FW, it won't work.

Sword Against Sword (http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/redemption/images/a/a9/Sword_against_Sword_%28Ki%29.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130421153540) only says to choose 2 ECs. Couldn't I still choose 2 non-FW ECs from battle or territories?
Maybe you were thinking of a card like Visions (http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/redemption/images/9/97/Visions_%28FF%29_-_Faith_of_Fathers.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20100523013621) that causes you to choose the blocking EC for the side battle? That shouldn't work if FW is the only EC in battle. If she was banded, by a card like Egyptian Magicians I think you could still choose EG.
-
You can absolutely choose two other ECs. I specified that you cannot begin a new side battle with (i.e. including) FW. Sorry for the confusion.

Sorry for the confusion.
Sorry for misunderstanding what you were trying to say. :)
-
So a new side battle begins and FW is in that battle as well, is she still protected since you have still drawn enough cards for the protection to activate?
-
FW is not in the new battle. She is in the field of battle, but not the new current one. Similar to how characters in an original battle that do not get moved to a side battle are still in the field of battle, but not in the main battle. So essentially, there are characters in three places: the original Hero(es) and non-FW ECs are set aside. FW is in the field of battle, but not in the new battle (and she is still protected assuming the requisite number of cards was drawn). And the new Hero(es) and blocking ECs are in the new main battle. After that battle ends, the set aside characters join FW in her battle, and that battle continues, with her still being protected.
