Add to battle + ignore

I can't use something with an "add to battle" ability if whatever I'd be adding is currently being ignored, correct?
Can I search with unknown nation and have my selected character sent to territory (thanks to ignore)?

My initial gut reaction is to say no.

But let me do some research and get back to you.

No and no.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

No and no.
I'm not so sure about that second no. Precedent for other "search and add to battle" (see Great Faith) has them given a play as that says the card can be added to battle or hand. I don't think UN can add to territory, but is there some reason it's different enough to not be able to add to hand?

That's a valid point. Reach of Desperation has 3 abilities that are all "may." Unknown Nation seems to have 2, which might mean you could search and add the EC to hand. As RDT said, this might require a bit of research and discussion.

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

The question was whether the EC would be sent to territory instead of battle if ignored.  Polarius was correct to answer that in the negative.

If it cannot be added to battle, it defaults back to your hand.  If for some reason you are also not allowed to add cards to hand, you return the card to the draw pile.

I agree on that point, I was wondering about Browarods question about Unknown Nation allowing an EC to be searched for and added to hand instead of battle.

So it can't be sent to territory, but hand is under discussion?

That's the current status of the inquiries, yes.

I agree on that point, I was wondering about Browarods question about Unknown Nation allowing an EC to be searched for and added to hand instead of battle.

Yes, but he was questioning Polarius' response.  The response was correct because the question was about territory.  Going to hand is a separate question not to be confused with the first.

I see no reason it would not go to hand as a fallback if ignored.

In the case of Unknown Nation, it differs from Great Faith in that it is not saying you may do X and/or Y and/or Z, but that you may pay the cost at your discretion in order to gain the benefit.  Since the benefit is twofold, one might argue that they are tied together.  But historically, these matters tend to be broadly permissive, so at first blush, I'm 90% certain that you have the luxury of choosing the ECs fate in either case.

Sorry, I should have only quoted the part of Browarod's answer that I considered a valid point, which was:

As it is, I also see no reason why the EC has to join the battle if the player merely wishes to search for an EC. Unknown Nation got so crushed by Nazareth that I'm glad it is actually a bit more useful than previously thought.

Could I also use this in multi, even when I'm not involved in the battle (add to hand)

No, because it does not say the more general "an" opponent, which defaults back to "the" opponent.  During the Battle Phase, only the two players locked in mortal combat consider each other "the" opponent.

In hindsight, that would have been a very interesting addition to multi strategy.
