What's In A Name

I was looking through the REG list of all the TexP cards to see which ones I have (which is more than I thought).  When I read Salome, I thought to myself, "I don't remember her story."  So, I copied the reference on the card to Biblegateway.com to read the section that has her.  To my surprise, her name never appears.  I went to Matthew and the same thing is there to.  The name doesn't appear in either books in that section.

Here's what the section that the card refers to:

Mark 6:21-29 (New Living Translation)

21 Herodias’s chance finally came on Herod’s birthday. He gave a party for his high government officials, army officers, and the leading citizens of Galilee. 22 Then his daughter, also named Herodias, came in and performed a dance that greatly pleased Herod and his guests. “Ask me for anything you like,” the king said to the girl, “and I will give it to you.” 23 He even vowed, “I will give you whatever you ask, up to half my kingdom!”

24 She went out and asked her mother, “What should I ask for?”

Her mother told her, “Ask for the head of John the Baptist!”

25 So the girl hurried back to the king and told him, “I want the head of John the Baptist, right now, on a tray!”

26 Then the king deeply regretted what he had said; but because of the vows he had made in front of his guests, he couldn’t refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner to the prison to cut off John’s head and bring it to him. The soldier beheaded John in the prison, 28 brought his head on a tray, and gave it to the girl, who took it to her mother. 29 When John’s disciples heard what had happened, they came to get his body and buried it in a tomb.

No where is the name Salome in the story.  An interesting fact, though, is that I did a quick search of the name and this is what came up:

1. Mark 15:40
Some women were there, watching from a distance, including Mary Magdalene, Mary (the mother of James the younger and of Joseph ), and Salome.
Mark 15:39-41 (in Context) Mark 15 (Whole Chapter)

2. Mark 16:1
[ The Resurrection ] Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and purchased burial spices so they could anoint Jesus’ body.
Mark 16:1-3 (in Context) Mark 16 (Whole Chapter)

So...why is the daughter of Herodias (who was also named Herodias) called Salome in Redemption?  Am I missing something?

Salome was the daughter of Herodias. She was married to Philip. After his death in 34, she married a relative Aristobulus, prince of Chalcis and had three children (Matt. 14:6-12; Mark 6:22-29).

Sometimes we get the real names from church history. Instead of titling the card "Daughter of Herodius", we named it "Salome". The events we have in the Bible regarding Salome are recounted in the gospels of Matthew and Mark, though her name is given only by the historian Josephus.

Excellent insights and work!

If that's the case, then why did the Bible say her name was also Herodias (see bold part in verse)?

You are referring to a translation of the Bible that I know little about and do not use. I generally use more widely accepted literal translations, and I don't think they include the name. The addition you are referring to came from church history and found its way into that translation.

NLT is not a literal translation; something like KJV, NKJV, or NASB are literal translations.  NIV is between the two sides.

Yeah, the KJV, Amplified, NASB and NIV all say daughter of Herodias.
