Aaron from priests Says "as long as he remains in play he protect your tabernacle artifact from evil discard." does ability activate as soon as he is played or you do you still have to make successful rescue or challenge to make it work?

You would have to enter battle for his ability to activate. So long as he survived the battle, and he was not negated, THEN his ability would take effect.

In case you missed it, definitely start with this post.  You'll get resources, rules that aren't in the other locations, and a good amount of FAQ that will answer a lot of questions you may have.

Then, just make these threads for questions you have that you don't have an answer to, and we'll come along to help out :)

Also, just confirming Minion's statement, anything that has a "while in play" on a character is still activated in battle (unless they are Territory Class, that's different), but its duration is "while the card is in play" instead of the default of end of the round.  Also note that cards that completed in a previous phase like this (a character is not reactivating while it is sitting in territory, even if the effect is continuing) cannot be interrupted or negated in a future phase.  So an activated Aaron cannot be negated after the battle he participated in (until he enters battle again, when he activates again), and his effect stays active until he leaves play in any way.
