Ending the battle

Say my opponent plays Forgotten History but my hero is still winning by the numbers (he made a mistake); can he play a dominant (Burial or CM) to stop the rescue attempt?  I ask because in the rulebook it says that "if no dominant is played during battle resolution to prevent it, [a lost soul is rescued]".  So does that mean that a dominant cannot be played after Forgotten History (or other "End the battle, CBN" enhancements) to prevent a successful rescue?

No, once a card ends the battle (Forgotten History and the like) the chance to play a dominant is gone. Basically Battle Resolution is just dealing with the end of battle.

note: removing the opposing side does not move right into resolution, only once both players have finished playing cards does the battle move to resolution (unless an ability does it)

That part of the rulebook was written before Battle Resolution was defined as it is now (or it was just an oversight)

If an "end the battle" card is played in a side battle, does it end just that side battle or the entire battle phase?  It came up in a game and I argued that it ended the full battle phase, as per the REG, but my opponent said they've seen it played where it only ends the side battle.

Quote from: REG
General Description
An end the battle ability ends the battle part of the battle phase and begins battle resolution.

The battle phase is just the section of the turn where battles take place. Each battle has its own subset of phases that it goes through, including battle resolution. I believe an end the battle card only ends the current battle its in, not the battle phase as a whole.

Any ability that refers to "the battle" or "in battle" refers only to the current battle (side battle or main battle). Thus an end the battle card played in a side battle only ends the side battle.
