Booster Draft Question (aren't these the best?)

Okay, it's not that awesome, but oh well.

I rescue with Shamgar, and he blocked with Abijah, Son of Samuel. I'm dying. I play A Roman Soldier's Faith (3/3, heal a hero in play) on Shamgar.

A. I gain 3/3 and there's no target for the heal because I'm no longer dying.
B. I was dying and have to heal myself, essentially retreating from battle.

You can heal something that is not diseased/dying.

And if there are no other heroes in play?

If you play it in battle, you only gain 3/3.

If you play it after battle, you can heal the hero and return him to territory.

That's not accurate. It was asked a year or two ago if you could play Healing of Namaan straight up without a diseased/dying character, in order to use the convert aspect of it. The answer was that to use a healing ability there has to be a valid diseased/dying hero/evil character.

If you play it in battle, you only gain 3/3.

If you play it after battle, you can heal the hero and return him to territory.

Why does it matter if its played in battle or not? Would your answer change if the Hero was Lot (2/2) vs Goliath (10/10) and he played it?

If you play a healing card on a character who is losing in battle, then they would not be discarded, but would still return to territory.

Right, I agree, so why would he only gain 3/3 if he played it in battle?

In battle, heal is an instant ability. You either use it on a hero in play, or you use it on the hero about to be discarded by the numbers. You can not delay the affect of the heal until after other enhancements are played.

Perhaps I am not understanding what you are getting at. Just explain the situation in detail and a more precise answer can be given.

I think you are confusing A Roman Soldier's Faith with The Body of Christ. A Roman Soldier's Faith is just a 3/3 enhancement that heals a Hero. The SA doesn't cause the Hero to gain 3/3.

Basically, what happens first, the numbers or the SA? Because if the SA activates first, then Shamgar is dying and is the only target for healing. If the numbers happen first, then nobody will be dying once the SA activates. If they happen simultaneously, a black hole is created.

Characters losing by the numbers aren't actually being discarded until battle resolution. People will often play a Healing Enhancement while the cards are still in battle, but it's a logistical shorthand for playing it immediately after the battle. Playing a non-optional Healing card with the only valid target being a hero losing by the numbers, but in no other way decreased/diseased/poisoned/being Discarded will not Heal that hero.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!
