T.O.S.S: The Official Set Smackdown

Registration is Full! Please PM me if you'd like to be a "backup" for any players that may need to drop out

Ladies and gentlemen, I have been ruminating on an idea for awhile, and now is the time when I'd like to implement it:

T.O.S.S: The Official Set Smackdown.

As each new set comes out, several new cards are added to decks, but not all of the old cards are replaced. Some older cards have stood the test of time, despite reprints, hard counters, and the stigma of being "old". Well, now it's time to find out which set is best. Here's how it will work:

Who: Anyone who signs up on this thread (up to 16 people) before 10:00 PM CST, Sunday June 2nd.
What: A double elimination bracket-style RTS tournament.
When: Starting Monday, June 2nd, through late June to early July (depends on the number of people, 1 round minimum per week)
Where: Online or in person
Why: Because it'll be fun, and there will be prizes.

How:
When you sign up on this thread, you will choose a set from the list below (first-come, first-serve). You will then build as many T1 decks as desired from cards from that set only (adding generic LSs as necessary). There is no need to check in decks, and you can use as many different decks as you want. You can "customize" your deck based on what your opponent is using before your game. Patriarchs players may only rip three Plots (just like in ROOT). All T1 deck-building and play rules apply, with one of the following changes (up to a vote, please vote when you sign up):

a. Sites are limited to 1 per deck.
b. Sites can be decked as you like (up to # of LSs) but single-color sites cannot be occupied.
c. All Heroes have access to all sites.
d. No change.
e. All Heroes with no printed special abilities have access to all sites.

Based on voting, there will be no change to how sites work. I would ask those of you who have sites available to not use sites that your opponent cannot possibly have access to or be able to deal with, in the spirit of good competition. This applies mostly to the Original/Prophets set, and the C/D and I/J starters.

Please choose from the following Sets:

1. Un/Limited/A/B Decks/Prophets
2. Women
3. Warriors
4. C/D Decks (1st and 2nd Edition)
5. Apostles
6. Patriarchs
7. E/F Decks
8. Kings
9. Angel Wars
10. G/H Decks
11. Priests
12. FooF (2007 and 2011)
13. RoA (2008, 2011, and 2013)
14. TexP
15. Disciples
16. I/J Decks

I am hoping to fill out the 16-set bracket entirely, so if there are fewer than 16 people by Sunday, I might open up registration to multiple people with different sets (two different entries).

Requirements: RTS and Hamachi are required, and the newest sets must be loaded (even if you are not playing with or against RoA/I/J).

More details in the next post...

Time limits will be 1 hour, but may be waived/modified as agreed by both players.

Timeout wins and losses are equivalent to full wins and losses (since it is a bracket tournament) and LS differential is unnecessary as well (so you don't have to report scores, just results)

Ties will be determined in one of two ways (depending on what you and your opponent decide):

A. A sudden death OT extension of the game (next person to rescue an LS wins)
B. A new game with the same decks, played to 1 point. For this match, Son of God and New Jerusalem have no effect.
C. A full new game with the same decks. This is the default choice if you and your opponent cannot decide on one of the other options.

Disconnects and Ghosts will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

The time limit for Rounds will be 1 week (as in ROOT) but if you can play earlier on, that is great. It doesn't matter the order games are played in, as long as they are all played with the correct opponents.

Prizes:

1st: Your choice of any card from the set you chose, or an I/J starter deck.
2nd: Your choice of any card from the set you chose (under $10 on TLG), or the Tin 26 ten card set.
3rd: Your choice of any card from the set you chose (under $5 on TLG), or any three booster packs in print (no Women or Warriors, you may also choose 1 Disciple or TexP pack)

Sign-up sheet:

No.Name(Set)Site Choice?
1.Prof Underwood(FooF, 2007 and 2011)C
2.Wyatt Marcum(Priests)D
3.Red (Disciples) D
4._JM_ (RoA, 2008, 2011, 2013) C
5.Drrek (I/J Decks) D
6.browarod (G/H Decks) C
7.Isildur (Original Set and Prophets) D
8.theselfevident (TexP) D
9.Westy (E/F) D
10.Redoubter (Angel Wars) C
11.Gabe (Warriors) D (E)

13.KoalaKing (Apostles)D
14.jbeers285 (C/D Decks) D
15.Red Dragon Thorn (Patriarchs) ?

I'll join and reserve FooF.

This is an interesting idea.  My first thought is HOW on earth can this be at all balanced.  But then I Remembered that the old sets/starter decks that I wouldn't think would have a chance actually could.  All starter decks get the advantage of having great dominants (SoG/AotL/CM/Burial), and Women's get Falling Away.

This could be really fun.

I definitely think this format is broken, but it's also meant to be broken probably in some ways. If I had more time, I'd probably join with RoA, but I can't commit to it.

That's what I was thinking as I was ruminating. There are also several cards from older sets like Prophets that might end up not having good counters in some of the newer sets (Confusion, Hunger, Great Image, etc.).

I definitely think this format is broken, but it's also meant to be broken probably in some ways. If I had more time, I'd probably join with RoA, but I can't commit to it.

Yes and no. I mostly want to see which sets get picked first, and how those compare to how well they do overall. It will also be interesting to see who can come up with ways to counter the dominant strategy of their opposing sets.

Anyway, please make sure to also vote on how to deal with sites. That was the one thing that could be truly broken, especially when facing the pre-Women set.

I actually think that G/H probably has the best chance of winning. As far as sites, I don't know how much of an issue they will be since most decks in this format are going to be many, many colors. I'd say limiting sites might be the way to go though (maybe 2x?)

Perhaps, but the sets with Teal and Silver sites are going to be able to dominate all of the older sets for sure, and probably most of the sets in general (as teal and silver will really only be good in a few sets).

G/H would probably get one of the higher sets of odds if we did odds. But I presume that gambling probably wouldn't be acceptable here...

I have long since deleted Hamachi off my computer, but this tournament looked fun.

I would have chosen  Warriors first  (maybe Priests...I think both have a good shot).
                                 Priests second.
and     Unlimited, etc....  third (mostly for the challenge).

I will be curious to see what comes out on top.

My thought is that Sites should be limited in some way.

that would only matter for newer colored sites, like teal. but there are heros with site access everywhere.

This intrigues me.  I'll sign on, and claim RoA.  Regarding the site question, I think C (all heroes have access) is the best option.  Allows for souls like site discard and deck discard to work (unlike B), keeps the full set in play for all sets with sites in them, and doesn't punish the pre-Women's sets.

but everyone will have rainbow decks. only one or two sets will manage to make a deck that is fairly focused on a single color. and those are priests, and mabey angel wars.
