T.O.S.S. Bracket
« on: May 30, 2013, 12:10:26 PM »
0
This is the bracket for the T.O.S.S. Tournament. I will fill it out with participants' names when the rankings are set. Check back here after every round to see who you play next. Rounds will last a maximum of 1 week, but because of the nature of the tournament, you don't necessarily need to wait if your next pairing is set.

If anyone has any questions, please PM them to me. This is also where you can report results. If anyone wants to fill out a bracket once the rankings are set, please PM it to me (You can either copy the formatting of this post, or just provide a list of who ends up in what position). I will come up with a prize for the best bracket if there are at least 5 entries. Bracket scoring will be as follows:

1 pt. for each correct winner in Rds 1 and 2
2 pts. for each correct winner in Rds 3 and 4
4 pts. for each correct winner in Rd 5
6 pts. for each correct winner in Rd 6
8 pts. for each correct winner in Rd 7
12 pts. for correct Champion
Tiebreaker will be closest guess of score of final Championship game.

I haven't played ROOT in awhile (which I assume is where we're basing the rules/time limits on) so could you refresh me on the time limits/special rules/etc. for this tourney?

Would it be possible to include more matches in the later rounds to determine the exact placing of the sets, and to give people who chose the weaker sets more chances to play?  As in, matches between the players who lose two matches just to get a final ranking.

All the rules are laid out in the registration thread.

I will look into that.

Can we hold off posting who wins for a bit.  I'm trying to fill out a bracket now that I know who's playing who.

Also, am I misunderstanding how it all works?  It looks to me like if RDT and I win the first round that we'd play in the winner 2nd round and TSE & Wyatt would play in the loser 2nd round.  But then if I beat RDT and Wyatt beats TSE, then wouldn't Wyatt at RDT play AGAIN in the loser 3rd round?  Do we want to repeat opponents like that?

That's how double elimination works.

It wouldn't have to be.  We could invert the 3rd round losers so that they'd have different opponents.  I'd have to work out the brackets farther, but I can probably ensure that no one plays the same opponent until the last round later rounds.  Wow, double elimination brackets are a headache.  No wonder we don't use this at Nats :)

lost to ProfU 5-0, although this score seems like a complete blowout, it was a lot closer than it seems.

Sorry I didn't allow more time. I think I will just not count points for the first round (only one person submitted a bracket before results came in) so anyone who has submitted a bracket can modify it based on the results here. I will accept brackets up until next Monday evening, when I will update the brackets for the next round.

As for repeating opponents, that is inevitable in any double elim tournament, no matter how you work it. Whether the repeat opponents are in the third round or the fifth, they will happen. You are welcome to propose an alternative bracket, but I make no promises about implementing it.  :)

If you finish your Round 2 match before the next round officially begins (on Monday evening) then please PM me your results rather then posting them here, so people can fill out their brackets.

I think repeating in the 6th round is better because there will be less repeats.  And for being able to tell which sets are best, having less repeats in the earlier rounds (when there are more decks alive) is a good thing.

I think the easiest way to do it is to invert the losers in round 3.  This would look like this:
Round 1Round 2Round 3Round 4Round 5Round 6Round 7
A1: 1. ProfU (FF)   I1:ProfU (FF)     Q1:IWinner     W1:QWinner     Z1:XWinner     BB1:ZWinner     CC1:BBWinner
A2: 16. TSE (TP)    I2:BWinner     Q2:JWinner     W2:RWinner     Z2:QLoser     BB2:AAWinner     CC2:WLoser
B1: 8. Wyatt (PT)   J1:CWinner     R1:KWinner     X1:SWinner     AA1:YWinner
B2: 9. RDT (PA)     J2:DWinner     R2:LWinner     X2:TWinner     AA2:RLoser
C1: 4. _JM_(RA)     K1:EWinner     S1:PWinner     Y1:UWinner
C2: 13. jbeers285 (CD)     K2:FWinner     S2:ILoser     Y2:VWinner
D1: 5. Gabe (Wa)     L1:Red (Di)     T1:OWinner
D2: 12. Isildur (AB)     L2:Drrek (IJ)     T2:JLoser
E1: 3. browarod (GH)     M1:TheSelfEvident (TP)     U1:NWinner
E2: 14. RTSManiac (WO)    M2:BLoser     U2:KLoser
F1: 6. TechnoEthicist (KI)     N1:CLoser     V1:MWinner
F2: 11. KoalaKing (AP)     N2:DLoser     V2:LLoser
G1: 7. Red (DI)     O1:ELoser
G2: 10. Westy (EF)     O2:FLoser
H1: 2. Drrek (IJ)     P1:Westy (EF)
H2: 15. Redoubter (AW)     P2:Redoubter (AW)

CCLoser Takes 3rd Place

Championship Round(s)
CH1:WWinner
CH2:CCWinner

If CH1 Wins, then CH1 is Champion, CH2 Takes Second Place

If CH2 Wins, then rematch:
CH1:WWinner
CH2:CCWinner

Winner is Champion, Loser Takes Second Place.
I think that should keep people from duplicating opponent's until the 6th round.

Would it be possible to include more matches in the later rounds to determine the exact placing of the sets, and to give people who chose the weaker sets more chances to play?
I was looking at the brackets, and think this would be pretty easy.

4 people will be eliminated after 2 games, and none of them would have played each other.  They could do 2 more rounds (round 1 = AvsB, CvsD / round 2 = winners, losers) to give solid rankings.

4 people will be eliminated after 3 games, and IF we switch to my proposed brackets, they would not have played each other either, and could also do 2 more rounds to give solid rankings.

2 people will be eliminated after 4 games and could play each other to rank them.

2 people will be eliminated after 5 games and could play each other to rank them.

The rest of the tournament eliminates people 1 at a time, so they'll automatically be ranked.

That depends. It works for the most part like ROOT, you guys try to coordinate a time to play, and if you can't work it out, then I'll have to decide who goes on based on who made a more significant effort to play. There is a chance that time could be extended for the round, but make sure you PM your opponent ASAP to try to set up a time to play.

Have you had a chance to think about my proposal?

I'll look at it and decide later this afternoon.

Update:

Since it does seem likely that we will have some early repeat matches, I have decided to modify the bracket based on Mark's proposal. This does not affect any current games. I will be updating the bracket shortly. I have only had two responses to my bracket challenge as of yet (you may still enter up until Monday when the second round officially begins) but if either of the entrants would like to modify their brackets, please let me know.
