Tournament Scoring Spreadsheet Updated

All,

I updated the tournament tracker, an Excel spreadsheet that can be used to score and create pairs/tables for tournaments. The new version corrected a few bugs when only 2 or 3 players were entered for an event (the ranking numbers couldn't be generated).

I also added code to check for scores over the legal limit (5 for type 1 and 7 for type 2). It now warns you if you try to go the next round with a score over the legal limit. You are allowed to keep the larger value, but at least warned that it is over the limit. Cactus only allows a score over the legal limit if two or more players tie at the end of the game for the win, and one played a Son of God + New Jerusalem combo. Typically, if you play this combo while leading 4-3, you would only get to keep one of the two Lost Souls and end up with a 5-3 score. However, there are cases where a 5-5 tie could result, with a Son of God + New Jerusalem being allowed to result in a 6-5 win. This is very rare, and very unlikely. Hence, i place a warning instead of an error in the spreadsheet.

If you have not used the spreadsheet, you are encouraged to try it out. It can be downloaded from Cactus' website. It requires you to change the protection in Excel to allow macros to run, since all my code is in the macros. The spreadsheet has beeen used for over 6 years at all levels, including nationals. It is user friendly and it is reliable.

Regards,
Mike

Thanks, Mike.  I used it.  Love it.  And was wondering when we could expect an update with the new changes but didn't know who to ask.

Did you also change the way it scores byes?  Version 2.2 was still giving a -3 LS differential when it should have been 0.

Gabe,

Would you mind elaborating? I am years beyond version 2.2, so don't know what specifically you think it should be doing. Whatever it is, it should be easy to fix. Now is the time to ask - the code is fresh in my head.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I downloaded your new version and after a couple tests it looks like it's scoring a bye correctly.  It used to give a 3 points and -3 for LS differential instead of 3 points and 0 LS differential.  I noticed we're on version 2.6 now so that was probably fixed a while ago.

Thanks, Mike!

Roy,

It uses macros so they have to be enabled.  I imagine that is the source of your problem.  Either that or *insert random Mac joke here*.

Mike, I don't know if it was an old version but at North Central Regionals we had an issue where the computer paired the same two people twice in consecutive rounds (the two players in last place). Ben Nicholls said that the program failed to check to see if the last two players had already played. Is that able to be adjusted or not?

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

It's on the Cactus Games Redemption website under the tournament info section.

I downloaded it and tried it out (I've seen it used in tournaments, so I know it works). When I run it on my computer, it gives me an error message that the score in the "Total LS Diff." column "must contain a non-negative score." But total LS differentials can be negative. What's happening?

Hey,

Are you on the multiplayer page?  In multiplayer differential is just used for lost souls rescued so it could not be negative in that case.

Steve, remember to focus on what you see on your row and column headings.  You DO NOT input any LS differential, only player scores.  Please also note Tim's (Sirnobody) comment.  Let us know your specific input experience if our suggestions still do not work.

OK, here's what I do:

1) Make sure I'm on the "2-player-1" tab. I have the default entries (1 and 4) for ty[e and number of rounds.

2) Hit "Start" to start new game.

3) Use "Add" to enter players. I enter 8 dummy names.

4) Enter scores under the columns "Player Score" and "Opponent's Score." All scores are 5-something. I do not enter anything in any other column.

5) Spreadsheet calculates points and differentials in the appropriate columns.

6) I hit "Next" to go to another round.

7) Error message pops up. It wants a non-negative number in cell E3. (Since I got this once, I always make sure the top player "loses" the round to test.)

Am I missing a step?

3a.) Apologize to the RLKs for calling them "dummies."

5a.) Pray before hitting "Next."

7a.) Pound the keyboard with your fist, and slap the monitor.

Rex, why in the world are you posting in a thread that hasn't been used since 2009? 😛. That was my timer and I'll see if I can track down where I got it.
