If a Tournament Host were to have a draft with "pure" re-packs, how would this make you feel?

In an effort to help with continuity for a draft, I was considering taking the large pack from a booster pack and repacking it with cards of that same expansions. So, for example: you would open a FoM pack and it would have the factory little pack, but the big pack would also have FoM cards. This way you could draft better strategies.

I have three major concerns:
1) tournament participants may be concerned that the "chase" cards were removed
2) the strategy for drafting a set wouldn't be balanced
3) cost to make these packs would be high given that all 15 would be from the same set.

what are some of your thoughts?

If you have a group with the funds to do something like this (which most don't). You can simply sell them 3 or 4 of each box and tell them to open them all and only draft from that set. So basically, open 3 FoM packs, they get to keep all the non-FoM cards in those packs, but can only draft from the 15 from that set (same with EC). The others only contain 4, so you would have to draft 3 packs for 12 cards, or 4 packs for 16, and just repeat previous step. That would be a load of fun, but the cost is going to prohibit this from happening. Opening all those packs would allow you to not have to touch them before and possibly remove or pre-load a pack (which I'm not saying would happen, but that would be my first concern as a player). But again your cost is going to be huge! You are looking at around $100 (or more) just to try to get somewhere close to the "typical" number of cards you draft.

Again, I would love to do something like this, but I don't have anyone in my group even remotely able to do something similar, unless someone comes up with a cheaper way to do it.

The idea came from the way other CCGs do tournament drafting. The packs are pre-opened and each player's (when receiving their packs) detailed list of cards is with the judges to avoid cheating or introducing cards into the draft that were not supposed to be there.

"Draft packs" are also something that could be a thing. I remember Decipher (I'm on a Decipher kick today I guess haha) had draft packs they would use as a basis for drafting.

For anyone not familiar with the concept... they are sorta like tins except instead of a random fixed pack of 10 cards you get a pack of about 20 or 30 semi randomized cards which is then either kept or drafted by everyone. The semi randomized packs provide enough "core" cards that you never really have a draft where anyone gets completely hosed by their packs.

This sounds interesting. What would keep people from just purchasing those “draft” packs vs standard packs though for collecting?

Nothing is stopping anyone from purchasing draft packs! But no one would every want to buy a draft pack.

They are sorta like the old school MTG starters where it's semi random cards from a specific set. The semi random cards are all commons and uncommons and one rare. (I think that's what the Decipher distribution was...)

With all the random cards floating around Cactus I'm sure something similar could be whipped up and developed from the Originals through Kings cards. Something like this could also easily be created with hosts personal collections.

The Redemption draft packs could always include X number of Good Cards and X number of Evil cards with a set number of characters and enhancements for each alignment. The distribution would maybe be 8 characters and 6 enhans for each alignment, and 6 forts, arts and/or doms for the last 6, to make 30 cards for each pack.

For multiplayer drafting we could have a "draft pack" with maybe 20 or 30 cards each, a regular 10 card tin pack, and 2 newer style packs as a draft instead of having a hodgepodge of random new and old packs or being forced to open foil packs.

The whole point of the draft packs is to make things slightly more consistent without ruining the random element of drafting.

interestingly enough, this is actually what made me start this post. Decipher's games have a lot of good material that Redemption should look at it. Their games are often character driven from books (sounds familiar?) and they had the same thing, if you dont have a good pool of characters for sealed, you just loose.

SEB, do you remember how Decipher packaged those "draft boxes" around the time Shadows and Blackrider came out? It had the Weta Workshop promos in them like Elrond's Sons. I can't remember if those included draft packs or not. Were those supposed to be for sealed deck or drafting?

I remember those being pretty popular when they came out. I still think the Anthology series Decipher would release for every block with their games was fantastic. I wouldn't complain if Cactus started making their own Anthology boxes!

So Blackrider was a hazy time for me, as I was in the lot of the "old school" players who were not thrilled with the changes they had made. I was willing to overlook it, but most of my playgroup abruptly stopped playing. That being said, I don't remember WETA cards in draft packs. (I may have a copy or two of the sons tho), but around that time was when they started introducing more and more WETA cards.
