What should the new rule for ROOT be next time?
« on: April 30, 2012, 01:54:10 PM »

For the May/June ROOT, Chris and I have decided to let the players choose which new rule we'll experiment with:

A - "Gifts of the Magi" Gamerule - This would just make a gamerule that says that if your opponent draws a card because of a special ability, then you also MAY draw and equal number of cards.

B - ROOT Restricted - This would test out the idea that Rob presented about limiting decks to ONLY having 2 good dominants and 2 evil dominants in them.

C - Shorter time limit - This would test out what ROOT would be like if there were a 1 hour time limit on games, instead of a 2 hour time limit.

So which of these would you all most like to try out for one month?

P.S.  Please don't vote if you don't participate in ROOT.  This is really just for the players to decide.  Thanks :)

Would I be allowed to vote if I am more likely to participate next month if the rule I vote for is chosen and implemented?

I kind of have a toss-up between A and B, but B seems to be the better option just because it doesn't destroy the game.

A would give defense-heavy decks a much larger advantage over offense-heavy because they can get cards out quickly too. I think that this would also add a completely unnessicary and otherwise unusable Hur or Love at First Sight.

B would help players make more balanced decks and would close the gap on speed because the game would no longer revolve around pull out high-powered Doms. It also leaves more room for other cards.

C is just a bad idea. Any turtle deck would time out and people would only go speed.

1 would be so OP to anyone who doesn't play speed because everyone in ROOT pretty much does so you can just stack your deck with the most powerful abilities in the game, and not have to worry about adding speed at all. I would build a deck to take advantage of that no question.

Or, everyone thinks exactly as you have, and the gameplay turns out being slower than you think.

Just a quick note, I'll be monitoring this thread and keeping track of the arguments for a given rule change. In the event of a tie, I'll break it, since I'm currently refraining from voting.

And then we have games that are not Speed vs. Speed and all is well.

The "gifts of the magi" rule would be an optional draw for the person whose opponent drew right?  Because otherwise, Luke would deck out their opponent incredibly fast.

Gifts in itself is a may so I'm assuming a game rule based on the card would be a may as well.

If you are sure you would participate next month assuming your vote wins, then yes you can vote.  If it only increases the chances, then probably best to let others who are more likely to play carry the day.

Yes, it would optional.  Good thinking.

P.S.  I think it's funny that only 1 person has even mentioned the time limit rule in this thread, and that was to say that it was a bad idea.  Yet that option is currently in the lead :)

I am opposed to A, and would consider NOT participating if that were to be the rule. It changes the game too much, and since the purpose of ROOT's rule changes have usually been as a testing ground for future potential rule changes, and this is not likely to ever be a rule, I don't think it's worthwhile.

I like B, voted for it, and hope to see it become the ultimate decision. I think that the restricted format would be a great option for future tournaments, and I hope to be able to host/play in some of those tournaments in the next year.

I would be okay with C, but with all of the issues people have had with connecting/disconnecting on RC, I'm not convinced it's a great idea. Also, I don't know what it is, but a lot of people just naturally play slower on RTS than in real life, so that even though a lot of game functions are faster in RTS, games take just as long or longer than they would in real life. I'd probably prefer a 75-90 minute time limit if this were the option, but I guess it'd be okay as long as everyone agreed to be as speedy as possible.

If B goes through I'd love to take it one step further.

In my area we have really been hoping for Type-3. Instead of jumping right to that we can do the unofficial band list.

We could create the banding list with a nomination thread.

I'd nominate cards like, Uzzah, AUtO, Plot, AoCP, NJ, and any other annoying cards.

C is the most logical because it makes all these people that play slower than molasses speed up as well as making more like an official RL tourney and making it better for people who have cramped schedules.

I could see this rule possibly running in conjunction with rule option B. which is in the lead.

Goody, so we could see decks with Sabbath Breaker x2...

But seriously, I'd be okay with the idea. Just out of curiosity, would this mean I could use 24 Legions in my 154 card deck???

I don't think so, the legion identifier is specific that its four per 50, which overwrites the game rule, and I think the same thing would happen here.

I disagree, if only for the opportunity to boss an Elder around.  ::)

I probably won't play next month, but for real-world tournaments, isn't there already a one hour time limit and a limit of one dominant (two if your playing restricted)?

The time limit is 45 mins, and no, the limit is as many dominants as lost souls.

No, I'm hosting a tournament in about a week. I'm pretty sure it's whatever you want it to be (suggested time: 1 hour), and one good and one evil dominant (two of each if they said they were using restricted rules (shouldn't it be relaxed?)).
