Dec/Jan ROOT

This will be the next ROOT tournament for the 2012-2013 Season. If you want to join, post here, and I will give you a matchup for next week.

Players have suggested many rule modifications in the past.  This month there are 3 rule modification possibilities to choose between.  The one that gets the most votes will be the one that we'll use for this month.

Winning Rule Modification - "Type 3" Rules - All decks follow T1 requirements with the exceptions that they must be exactly 60 cards with an equal number of good and evil cards.  Winning requires rescuing 6 LSs.

Similar to last month, all posts made by Monday night/early Tuesday morning will be counted as official, unless it is contradicted by an opponent.

Week 5 (Final) Matchups:
tse vs. jmhartz
RTSmaniac vs. slug
ProfU vs. jbeers285
Thomas Hunter vs. Westok
_JM_ vs. cooldudejsw *
Wyatt vs. bye

*this is technically a rematch from earlier in the month, but both of these players have already had a bye, and they never actually played their earlier game.  And since this game is at the bottom of the standings, it is better to repeat it, than to match them up with people ranked much higher.

Rankings after Final Week:
     Player:                      VPs (Diff)
1.  jmhartz                               (16/8)
2.  RTSmaniac                           (13/7)
3.  Prof Underwood                  (13/2)
4.  theselfevident                    (12/7)
5.  Thomas Hunter                   (11/1)
6.  slugfencer                           (8/-9)
7.  jbeers285                           (6/1)
8.  Wyatt_Marcum                   (6/-4)
9.  Westok Kiok                        (6/-6)
10.  _JM_                                 (4/3)
11.  cooldudejsw                     (4/-2)
12.  Strider                              (0/-5)                 *dropped
13.  MKC                                  (0/0)                  *dropped by PM

C, though Double elim wouldn't be bad either.

And Best out of 3 would be nice.

I'll play again.  :)

What is the change with Gifts of the magi? And with the single elim tourney, would that be on the side of the normal tourney? Just wondering.

When are we doing best of 3 with siding? This was suggested months ago, and still nothing has been done yet.

I would just say I don't have a clue what siding is, I'm not opposed to best of 3 though

Also I know there were some extra things that needed to be nailed down before siding would work

I propose being able to use multiple generics in t-1 decks limited to 2

If had to vote from the 3 available I'd vote for t-3

I'd vote C, but I'd prefer double elimination or best 2 out of 3 with sidebar.

I would also vote C if it were best 2 of 3 (with siding preferably). Congratulations, everyone makes Top Cut! :)

This is entirely correct.  I won't be putting sideboarding as an option until we get a clearer picture nailed down regarding that.  As far as I know there has been no movement on that thread in a while, and when we left off there was no consensus on how big the sideboard should even be.

If that thread ever gets to a more finalized form, I'll add it to the list of options.  But for this month, the options are simply the 3 that are listed.

What is the change with Gifts of the magi? And with the single elim tourney, would that be on the side of the normal tourney?
The change with GotM is that BOTH players may draw extra cards when EITHER player plays a card to draw.  And if we go with option C, then that will be the only tourney for Dec/Jan.

I propose being able to use multiple generics in t-1 decks limited to 2
Please propose that in the thread for future experiments.

I'd prefer double elimination
This will probably be an option for a future month.

I don't really like any of the options then... I wouldn't play more than a game in single elim...

I'm in. Single elimination (w/ a consolation pool with no rankings so people still get paired up for fun and continuance of participation but don't keep scores)

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of single-elim either.  But since it proposed I wanted to at least give it a shot.  And I figured that people might not mind as much getting knocked out over the holiday season when it might be harder for them to get their games in anyway.

Personally I'll be happy to try either the GotM rule or the Type3 rule, so I hope they win the vote :)

People are always welcome to play games for fun, but I doubt that I'll schedule games for eliminated participants.  Again, it's the holiday seasons, and making extra work for myself probably isn't going to be my first choice.

I would be willing to run a separate thread that creates pairings for the eliminated players if this is something people would want me to do?

Honestly, I'm disinclined to play if those are the only options. Since single elimination has a clear lead, can we at least let people vote on single vs. double elimination?

Since no one ever said siding as an option in ROOT was contingent upon that thread (and really it doesn't take rocket science to iron out the few details, most people can grasp the idea fairly easy), I've since bumped that thread to nail down the particulars. Maybe we can actually play some strategic games instead of lolcoinflipiwin sometime soon before Duke Nukem Forever 2 comes out?

Also, I must point out that if both players had GotM out it would be a cyclical draw (if the rule mod. is enforced) causing players to draw until hand limits are met. Just saying.

Actually eliminating all the votes for single-elimination on the condition of sideboarding (which isn't happening this month), there are really only 2 votes for it besides yourself Chris, and one of those is Westy who hasn't even said for sure that he's playing.  So really the vote is still wide open.  However, double-elimination isn't on the table for this month.

Votes so far:
GotM -
T3 - jbeers285, MKC, Westok, JMHartz, RTSmaniac, Strider
Single - tse

Since no one ever said siding as an option in ROOT was contingent upon that thread
I felt like that thread was the best thread I've seen so far at ironing out the details, and I was following it with high hopes for a solid ruleset to experiment with.  I know I didn't announce it, but I guess the cat's out of the bag now :)

Also, I must point out that if both players had GotM out it would be a cyclical draw (if the rule mod. is enforced) causing players to draw until hand limits are met. Just saying.
Actually I don't think so.  GotM (the card) lets you draw based on your opponent's characters or enhancements letting them draw.  So if you drew cards due to your character's SA, then my GotM card would let me draw, AND the gamerule modification would let me draw as well.  However I would be drawing due to an artifact and gamerule, so neither of those would activate your GotM card.

This is stupid. It's hard to support a tournament that makes false attempts to give the people formats they desire. Let us sideboard. Until you start listening or do another non rule change month I'm sitting out.

If there won't be a best 2 of 3 then I'll go with the second choice. Balanced decks means more grind gaming and actual back and forth battles, and less of a chance of speed decks exploding within the first few turns. I'm very curious to see what kind of meta this kind of rule change would produce, which I predict will be for the better.

I get it that you and many others really want to try sideboarding, and there will come a chance for that.  But your attitude here is really not worthy of the progress that you have made here on the boards Red.

All 3 of the choices for this month have been suggested by members of this forum, and just because you don't like them doesn't mean that this is a "false" attempt to give people a chance to try different experiments.  I don't even like all 3 of these options myself, but I'm putting them out there anyway because I want to be fair to people, and because this particular time of year seemed like a good time for it.

I'm running this tournament on a completely voluntary basis, and giving my time to try to make things fun and fair for everyone.  I know that there are a lot of people interested in the sideboard idea, and so I'm purposefully saving that one for a couple months from now when it will be more ironed out, and the time of year should also be more available to larger numbers of people to play than the holidays.  So if you want to have a "take my ball and go home" attitude, that is your choice, but don't expect sympathy from me.

I expect no sympathy. I just am making a choice and might have possibly used strong wordage. I apologize for any offense. However, I won't play under any of these rules but I do wish luck to those who do.
