Brainstorming ideas to increase involvement in RooT

I know it's a slow time of year in general for Redemption, but just wanted to start a thread to brainstorm ideas for increasing the number of games that are able to be played. It seems logical to perhaps start with making RooT "open play" where you can challenge anyone at any given time, but it would be good to have some structure to go along with that.

What are people's thoughts on a different points system? Should LS differential be used or ignored?

Please post your thoughts on what you would like to see for the next RooT session.  8)

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

I think ROOT would be fun but haven't played.  Here are a couple of reasons why, which may be applicable to others and provide value to you.

1. I haven't seen a thread on basics for how to get set up to be able to participate. I.E. generally how it works, what platform is used, how to access that platform, general schedule of sessions (so I can plan ahead), etc.  If there is, it should probably be stickied somewhere. If it is, my bad.

2. Time is a huge factor. I like the idea of having an "open play" style which could provide a lot more flexibility for some, however it seems like the advantage would go to those with the most time on their hands, which wouldn't particularly be fun either.  But as it stands now, I would feel bad signing up for a session and end up not being able to play games because too much was happening in any given week.

Of course now I see the thread that IS stickied.

However, too many words in there. It seems more complicated than I am sure it is.

Also, I added Himachi when I first joined the forums and had computer issues shortly afterward, so lost trust in the program.

Now that I say that, ROOT sounds like a virus anyway, so maybe a name change would help...while I am a little bit kidding, I do think a name change could  seriously help.

It's totally a time thing for a lot of us ):

Justin, do you still remember how old school pre ROOT Jacob's Ladder used to work? Where it was basically open play but you could only challenge people above you or X number of seats below you? I think a system like that could potentially work well!

The whole reason that system was done away with was because it didn't fit well with the RNRS competitive environment that ROOT later evolved into.

I think a more open format would likely be good. There isn't much difference between pick up games on lackey and ROOT other than ROOT being time restricted to play a game and pairings. Time is a huge factor for many. I think for ROOT to really take off though it would require getting more players utilizing lackey regularly to play in general regardless of how its formatted. I'm part of the population that doesn't really play games on lackey much and it's not just a time thing. I tend to just get frustrated playing games on lackey because of personal difficulties getting used to the interface and bombing games because of avoidable mistakes. Granted if I played more on lackey those issues would diminish over time and it would likely improve my play in tournaments so I guess it's just my preference to just deckbuild and dry run a deck with lackey than deal with the early frustrations. The incentives to play a ROOT tournament just aren't really there unless you're goal in playing is to be a better player.

2 week periods would help. I just didn't have time in 1 week. But in exchange maybe we could do best of 3 in 2 weeks?
They seem pretty lame as fighters maybe we should challenge them to a dance off or a redemption game

Honestly, I think a prize incentive would be the best idea. Special rnrs points or regular. Special Root promo or regular. I think it would be good for the game to grow our online presence and get more people to play online. I understand money is always an issue but the think the investment is worth it.

So the Type 2 Grand Prix offered prize support and a completely flexible schedule. Yet even with that participation was minimal.

Does that effect any one's assessment of how to increase participation in ROOT or is it simply that no one wants ot play Type 2?

This kind of lull in the fall is somewhat new. The new set didn't used to be legal until after nationals, which created some sort of excitement for fall tournaments. Now it's kind of a lull until the new set gets teased, which probably correlates to lackey attendance. I don't know what the solution is but I'm pretty sure this is a problem that would be helpful to address. Is it out of the question for a tin release around Christmas? Like when the tin was released with I and J starters? That way you could have some new cards to use in tournaments but not as much of a time commitment as releasing an extra set.
