Eternal covenant vs. Abaddon the destroyer

If someone uses eternal covenant to get back a hero than attacks with that hero, does abaddon negating the covenant send the hero back to the discard pile? Or does the fact that the phase has completed mean the hero cannot leave ?

The second interpretation is correct. Once the prep phase in which Eternal Covenant was used has moved to the battle phase then resurrecting the Hero can no longer be negated.
