Would you buy a playmat?

Gabe's post about an HD RTS background spawned discussion of playmats, and others have asked me about them in the past. If I were to get them printed, would you want to buy one? It looks like we would have to charge $25-30 each plus shipping, and I would have to have a decent number of people that definitely want one if I'm going to get them printed. Right now the only place I've found that is willing to print a custom image on them has a minimum of 250 playmats!

I would be hoping to get them in time for Nationals if we do it, so you could save shipping costs if you're going by picking it up there.

Let me know the probability that you would buy one in that price range!

Thanks,
Ken

I would suggest talking to Uthminister.  He has already gotten the rights to a couple REALLY cool pieces of Redemption artwork (Mayhem and Grapes of Wrath), and already set them up for playmat printing.  Perhaps you two could work together on this project.

I saw one of his prototypes at MW Regional and it was SWEET!

Regarding the playmats, I would be paying about $8 each plus shipping for them, but that is $2,000 for 250 playmats. Considering that I won't sell anywhere near that many, I need to try to break even within a fairly reasonable amount of time to make it worthwhile. Even at $25 each, I would need to sell at least 80, and I really doubt that I will have that much interest. My hope was to have 50-100 of them made so that the break-even point was more realistic than that...

Mark, I will talk to him, as well. :)

I would think that $25-30 would be a little high for me. I might wait until someone decides to quit and offers it on the market here.
Not that I'm not interested, I just don't have that much money to buy stuff with.
ANB is good. Change my mind.

Are play mats like a screen printed cloth? What are they made of?

They are a flexible rubbery material apparently. I haven't seen one in-person.

I generally don't play sitting on the ground, but perhaps that is only me. sounds like they would be visually appealing though

I am highly interested in at least 4, but I did semi-commit to Uthminister first.  I would feel much better about purchasing it if he was involved.  Also, like I told Travis, I like a lot of the angels from the comic book series (eternal studios I think).

They could be used on tables, too...

I PM'ed Travis and will be seeing what he's working on. The more people that I can find who are interested in purchasing them, the better the price will be so that I can be close to breaking even. If he has another source for getting them, that's even better!

In my opinion, weather a play mat sells or not is based on the art and the layout.  Travis has some great designs and he also does california and traditional format  250 playmats might sell if they had a variety of designs.

I definitely agree with this! The problem is they require 250 minimum per design layout.  :-\

The playmat is beautiful but I don't care for the California Style layout so I'd never use one.
Have you visited the Land of Redemption today?

I'd buy one-though I don't use California style either. We do stuff differently in Texas ;D

Ken, if you could post what designs you had in mind-that might sway some folks. It is always easier to sell something if you know what you are getting.  Shoot,if you and the Uthminister combine forces on this-it would be a joy to see what y'all can come up with.

They can be bought as Christmas gifts as well.

I like the playmats. I had never seen them before, until the guys from South Florida Redemption starting bringing theirs. For those who have never seen them, they tend to be almost an inch thick of soft neoprene material. They keep your cards from direct contact with the table, and make it easier to pick cards up, since you can press into the mat to get under the card and get a grip. I know that, for me, picking up cards from a hard table can be difficult. Often times, I have to slide the card to the end of the table to get it off.

I have seen generic versions of the playmat for $10 in gaming stores, so the price point will be an issue for me. I always try to support Christian businesses, even if it means paying more. However, paying double is stretching it.

I am interested but I also do not use the California layout, I use the same layout as defined in the Rulebook.  I think it would be a great idea to make sure you get the most popular format, whichever it is.  Other wise these may not sell well.  Looove the idea though :)

I have also done playmats using the Gates of Hell artwork and another one with the Throne of Heaven (not a redemption card) artwork. I agree that if we can do a single piece of art instead of two split down the middle it will be much better. I have had a hard time gettng ahold of cahaba/eternal studios in order to buy the rights for their art but I agree they are very cool looking. I have come to the conclusion from the thread I had about playmat layouts that we will have a hard time printing a mat with a layout everyone will agree upon. I think that we need to print whatever graphic we choose with a place for won lost souls only (probably only up to 5 since I don't really see type-2 being squeezed onto one of these mats).

Cactus probably only has the rights to the art for the expressed purpose of using them on Redemption cards. Otherwise, I think we'd see some Cahaba art on promotion items.
