"crap" may not be technically cursing, but they are crude words that some people find offensive.
And on that note, I'm fairly certain a certain naughty swear word is filtered to "crap" on the boards. Curse you, Schaef :P!

And while I agree with this sentiment, I do need to say that the amount of harm done by JSB's expression strikes me as rather small compared to the possible damage caused by a mature Christian brother misinterpreting Scripture (Romans 14) to bolster his side in a petty squabble.

I agree.  I grew up under this kind of legalism and the end result was the it gave me a false view of who God is, influencing me to choose years of rebellion before I saw my deep need for Him (and who He truely is).

All that to say this kind of abuse of scripture to support ones own petty preferences really torks me off.  Am I allowed to say that?

Ban.

From now on, we will use a new word to convey a strong sense of annoyance:

Anewbeginning/s/ed/y.

"Your anewbeginningy attitude is really starting to anewbeginning me off."
"Remember how anewbeginninged MJB was when they errata'd his favorite Green card? Twice? I can't even remember what card it was now though."

That was quite possibly one of the funniest posts I've read in a long time. It would have been the funniest if you had managed to get the /s/ form in there.

and one last note to YMT and Prof:
Who made you the "Moral guardians" of the boards?
Nobody wants it. Nobody needs it. The bible is very clear on the subject of judging others DON'T.
You are right that the Bible is very clear on the subject of judging others.  You are wrong about what it says.  The Bible actually says that we are NOT to judge those outside the church (that's God's job), but that we are supposed to judge those inside the church (that's accountability).  So either you are a Christian and my challenge to you is entirely appropriate, or you are not a Christian and I owe you an apology for assuming that you were.

I find it very difficult to find any "context" at all in which Romans 14 is meant to be taken to mean, "I have the authority to publicly rebuke a brother because how he chose to express himself personally offends me."

I PM'd my request first, to which he replied how he did. His refusal led to the "public rebuke" that you refer to.

And while I agree with this sentiment, I do need to say that the amount of harm done by JSB's expression strikes me as rather small compared to the possible damage caused by a mature Christian brother misinterpreting Scripture (Romans 14) to bolster his side in a petty squabble.

I think that Christians who choose to live without accountability are far more dangerous to the faith than one Christian asking another to watch his language. I find it much more "petty" to refuse to not use a word that fellow Christians have been trained their whole life to view as vulgar.

With that said, the question would be why "mature" Christians would drag a simple request this far? You speak of legalism. I was not questioning JSB's faith or calling him a sinner. I asked him to "watch his language." I do the same thing in public school every single day. Perhaps you are suggesting that I am being a false witness and should be hung, drawn, and quartered? For an adult to ask a young person to watch his language is part of normal society. Now when you bring in a Christian context, language should be even more in check.

If mature Christians are not supposed to guide young Christians in everyday behavior, then we are neglecting our responsibility. I refuse to believe that ignoring inappropriate behavior is God's Plan.

this is completely subjective. if it were 'vulgar', im pretty sure it would be censored on the boards.

Thank you for ignoring the verses I posted
I assumed that you posted those verses to YMT considering that I haven't referred to that passage at all during this thread.  As for my thoughts on them, I agree that we shouldn't look down on you (vs 10), but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't encourage you to do the right thing.  You already agreed that when you distress your brother because of your unnecessary actions that you aren't acting in love (vs. 15).  You said that "what you do doesn't really matter" which is a preposterous way to interpret verse 17 taken in context of the entire Bible.  And finally you said that YMT should keep his opinion between himself and God (vs 22), which is also clearly not meant to be universally applied considering all the places in the Bible that it talks about correcting our Christian brothers and sisters.

Now how about if you actually take seriously the verse that I posted.  What do you think about it?  And could you please tell me if you're a Christian or not so I can know whether to apologize to you or not?

but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't encourage you to do the right thing.
this thread is about encouraging for packs, not the right thing.  ;)

there is a point where encouragement becomes harassment. a person needs only be told once to be less ignorant. if they still refuse and they are not breaking a law or forum rule, best they be left to their own devices.

JSB, if nothing else, you are being completely disrespectful to your elders.

Besides, just because we are Christians doesn't mean we get to do whatever we want to. The bible says not to let filthy language come out of your mouth. What you said might not be considered filthy to you, but we are not to cause our brethren to stumble. I am certain YMT did not stumble because of this, but please keep in mind there are impressionable minds on here.

And FTR, "p" is a worse word than "crap".

I agree with this.  I responded to JSB's last post because I didn't know until then that he wanted me to reply to the verses he listed.  However, if he continues for too long in his refusal to listen to anyone else on this subject, then it will be time for me to simply leave him to his ignorance.

...subjectivity .....

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I think we should drop this now before we break the dam.

If keeping the dam is helping build more Uruk Hai, then I say break it!

Thank you for ignoring the verses I posted

It seems par for the course, since you did something you feel is correct but he feels is wrong, yet you feel the verse "do not let what you consider good to be spoken of as evil" is not relevant to the discussion.  Strange, since that is the entirety of the discussion.

Telling someone to mind their own business is a rather sketchy prospect on a public message board where the entire point is that the entire populace can see what you write and respond to it.  People only know what you tell them, and if it's posted openly there is no expectation that an issue is "personal" or "private".

Deference to brethren is not legalism.  It is an acknowledgment that not everyone shares in the same struggles or indulges in the same liberties.  Life abundant is tempered in setting a good example for others to follow.  To say "I don't care if you don't like what I do, just shut up and deal with it" does not strike me as the correct attitude in response.

An example: the encouragement system is not perfect but it's the best thing we have immediately available with the current version of this software.  Some like it, some do not.  Some have seen fit to argue about it, others to try and game it for purposes not entirely clear to me, and still others prefer simply to sabotage it.  The purpose of this system was never to cause contention among members of the board, yet it seems to be an unavoidable consequence.  Therefore I am shutting it down immediately.  Any issues not related to the now-defunct encouragement system I advise you to take to PMs.
