Are you still pissed about that?
I know you don't like me, but you really need to watch your language.

First off: What?

Second
I predict the encouragement will be gone by Friday

I believe he is referring to the 'p' word in your sentence. It may not be considered 'swearing', but it is a frowned upon word. Not that your a lady, but as my mother would say, it's 'unladylike'.

(So is belching...but I've never claimed to be a lady, just a princess ;) )

Technically, a Princess would be extremely ladylike.

My mom would have washed my mouth out with soap if I used that word. It's not very nice in general, but to my family it is indeed a swear word.

No, you didn't read the whole thing. You stopped at what you wanted to hear. Continue on with verses 15-20.

While I also am not in favor of the language used, I am having a really hard time following you here, YMT.

Taken in context Romans 14 is talking about causing the brethren to stumble by abusing our Christian freedom. It is not some general call to eliminate all that could possibly be offensive. Are you claiming the use of the word "pissed" is causing your faith to waver?

It is clear from things I have posted previously that I take a rather more expansive view of this passage and what can be considered a cause of stumbling for the brethren. That said, I really do not follow the argument you are advancing here.

"Taken into context" seems to be where we disagree. Verse 15 specifically talks about hurting fellow Christians, verse 16 about what you do being spoken of as evil, verse 18 about being acceptable to God and approved by men, verse 19 about pursuing peace, and verse 20 about giving offense.

Regarding all his other comments, it appears he has no respect for elders or fellow Christians who have asked him to watch his language. In fact his response by PM was "Nah."

Yeah, I'm with YMT here. Sure, the word is acceptable in many circles, but in this circle, an objection has been raised. It seems to me that if JSB was more interested in not being a stumbling block rather than in convincing others of the correctness his viewpoint on this matter, that the post in question would have been edited/removed by now.

I have made a similar post that was called into question by YMT in the past, in reference to a slogan used by Westboro Baptist Church. I simply removed the post. It really isn't that hard to do and is not worth the now wasted page of arguing. In a Christian Forum, we really shouldn't have to have these arguments. People should be willing to lay aside their rights for the betterment of the community (in this case, for increased unity).

I agree with YMT, ~Achewon Enleaye~, fyero, and Alex_Olijar.  Words like "pissed" and "crap" may not be technically cursing, but they are crude words that some people find offensive.  If these people have expressed that they are offended by them, then out of respect for your Christian brothers and sister, you should avoid using them.  I would understand if you continued to use them because there truly was no other way to express yourself.  However, anyone who can't express their feelings without the use of these crude words is quite simply ignorant of the English language.

I don't think JSB is ignorant, therefore, I would expect that he could find better ways to express himself.

well said. and i find YMT's scripture reference intriguing. We should all be cautious of what we say for we will all be held accountable, would you use words like those before God?

Fine we'll take it verse by verse
15 If your brother is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy your brother for whom
Fine I'll give you that, how the word "piss" destroys you I don't know but anyway

16 Do not allow what you consider good to be spoken of as evil.
This verse is completely irrelevant to this debate so we'll ignore it

17For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,
This verse says that what you do doesn't really matter, the kingdom of God is about peace and joy you're the one who started all this so...

18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.
Same as verse sixteen

Regarding all his other comments, it appears he has no respect for an elder or a fellow Christian who have asked him to watch his language.
I noticed a few errors in your previous post I just wanted to make sure no one got confused on how many people actually care

I responded the way I did because I really don't like it when people don't mind their own business

and since you apparently didn't see it before
10You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat.

22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God.

You really should read the entire chapter it's quite interesting

and one last note to YMT and Prof:
Who made you the "Moral guardians" of the boards?
Nobody wants it. Nobody needs it. The bible is very clear on the subject of judging others DON'T.

(deploys flame shield)

I find it very difficult to find any "context" at all in which Romans 14 is meant to be taken to mean, "I have the authority to publicly rebuke a brother because how he chose to express himself personally offends me." That interpretation makes mock of the prohibition against "passing judgment on one another" and the command to keep these things "between yourself and God" that bookend the passage in question. Romans 14 is about the responsibilities of Christian liberty and is not meant to serve as a basis for legalism.

Quote from: Proverbs 25:9-10
If you argue your case with a neighbor, do not betray another man's confidence,
or he who hears it may shame you and you will never lose your bad reputation.

And while I agree with this sentiment, I do need to say that the amount of harm done by JSB's expression strikes me as rather small compared to the possible damage caused by a mature Christian brother misinterpreting Scripture (Romans 14) to bolster his side in a petty squabble.
