so switch your plan to the iPhone plan.  The iPhone only works with AT&T.

wrong.  The iPhone does NOT have a CDMA chip set, it has a GSM chipset.  The only users of GSM in the US are AT&T and TMoblile. 

Your friend is incorrect I guarantee it.
