Cactus Game Design Message Boards

Hello everyone,

I have been very burdened with trying to help younger people try to learn, play and even collect cards for this game.  Needless to say when you are talking about younger people they don’t have their own money, so this is extremely difficult.  Due to playing this game for so long, I’m able to give students a lot of the older cards for little to nothing (almost always nothing), to my young playgroup members.  But when tournament time comes, they do enjoy playing this game, but are playing against cards they have either never seen or feel like they never can get.

So I want to fix this, but not just for my playgroup.  I would love to be able to reach and help several playgroups around me (which I have at least 3 with young kids in them).  So here is what my idea is:  I want to try to sell some complete sets of cards and give away the excess cards I get while completing the sets.  I would love to be able to give a young player a handful of the cards from the last few sets with no expectation of anything in return other than a thank you!

All I’m asking you to do is purchase a full set of cards from me and it will accomplish a list of several things:

•   Allows me to give excess cards (both old and new) for free to younger players that don’t have money, but enjoy this game!
•   Allows me to give free entry (and open categories) into tournaments for anyone under 18.  If I get quite a bit of support for this, I will offer this at ALL tournaments I host, including the next National tournament I host!
•   Allows this game to spread as students tell their friends about this awesome game, but also that there is a chance if they start playing and do really enjoy it, that this great community will help them acquire cards for free!
•   Allows me to help out other playgroups that are at tournaments I’m also attending.  It also allows me to help out brand new playgroups that pop up here on the boards as I will have extra cards to give out to them!  So some of you will also get some benefit out of this endeavor!

I do also want to point out things that are NOT the goal:

•   I have zero desire to compete with TLG on a large scale.  Obviously supporting me does take some sales away from TLG, but that is not the intent!  I will not sell singles or packs, as I will be attempting to trade or give all my excess away.  Plus there are people who will only want to buy from TLG, and that is awesome!  I have no issues with Travis, never have and probably never will as he is a great person.  Again, I have no desire to hurt TLG, I’m just trying to find a way to help this game (and my area) grow!
•   I don’t want the recognition of being “the guy who gives people free cards.”  I have zero desire to increase my name, but every desire to increase the name of this game.  I have honestly come to the point where I enjoy hosting and communing with people over playing, and this will help me do this even more!

So I am selling some of the last few sets to release, with the following prices:

The Early Church:  $300
The Persecuted Church:  $210
Cloud of Witnesses:  $440
Revelation of John:  $420
The Fall of Man:  $250


Shipping will be included in the prices listed above, so you don’t have to worry about extra cost.  I also take any kind of payment (check, money order, pay-pal, etc.), as well as payments over time.  If you would like to support this cause, but can only afford so much a month, I will go ahead and get your set(s) ready and once payments are complete (or close to complete) I’ll ship the product!

This sounds great, but I don't understand your model.

You are selling complete sets, but how does that help you acquire extra cards that you can give away?

Shouldn't you be asking people to donate their extra cards or something?

Donations are always accepted, but basically I’m buying some packs at a discount, then going to donate all the excess from the boxes.  I also have enough cards that I can suppliment the sets if I’m missing some cards.

As we get closer to the FoM release, I do want to remind people about this “program” I’m trying to get off the ground!  As an incentive, I’m willing to sell you the Legacy Rares I pull to complete your set for 50% off, or trade them to you for 25% off.  This should be 8-12 of them (since there are 3-4 per box).  There are some specific things I’d like to trade for, but since all of these cards will be for younger players, the expectations won’t be too high for anyone, as anything recent is helpful!

Hey everyone,

I know FoM is dropping soon and the majority of people have probably already ordered it.  But I wanted to go ahead and bump this again because I've added a link to the first thread (right above the prices) with a detailed description on what this "project" will look like and accomplish.

So please let me know if you have any questions/concerns at all.
