Two concerns for a new player

First of all, hello everyone! My name is David. I live in Pittsburgh, PA, so if anyone is in that area I would enjoy getting together to play sometime. Finding other players is an obvious concern, so if anyone is in my area let me know.

Next, which set is a good place to start? I ordered the lion tin online because the local Christian store only had packs and a rock of ages tin. Basically, what I got at the store combined with what I have ordered, I will have the lion tin, two thesaurus packs, one rock of ages tin, and one disciples pack. I'm not sure how important what I got really is at this point, but if anyone can suggest a particular set for me to focus on, I'd appreciate it! Thanks in advance :)

The best thing to do is theme your offense and defense and buy or trade for specific cards you want for your deck on this forum.  Disciples is great deck to learn from and to you, they pair well with a Pharisee based defense or even herod's.

Threelionsgaming.com (run by ken whose forum hand is Ken4Christ) is great tool for locating specific  cards and what sets you can find that card in. When you open your thesaurus packs the main 2 cards you will hope to find are mayhem and grapes of wrath, both valued at 25 dollars on three lions gaming they are a card type known as dominants and are used in almost every deck today.

Welcome to Redemption!
_JM_ (his user name on this forum) lives near Pittsburgh, and is very good with deck building and teaching and helping people new to the game. You could drop him a private message. I'm not sure if he'll see your post or not.

Best place to buy cards is via the Market here. Threelionsgaming is good, but a lot of times you can get sweet deals over there. It's generally singles, but way cheaper than buying packs.

However, I would familiarize myself with Rock of Ages (specifically Tin 19), Neutral Thesaurus cards (Dominants, Artifacts, etc), purple Disciples cards, and Tins 21-25. Then take a stroll through the deck building section and look up the other stuff. Unfortunately, they took the card information down on the main site, so now the only place to get it is Redemption Live, which takes a rather long time to load. Decks that use The Garden Tomb, Angel Under the Oak, and Ishmaiah are generally good decks to look at. Check out the nats winning deck. Then I suggest making a deck and start playing via RTS.

Check the member map to see players near you. I don't think the Berkenpasses are still active, but I'm not fully sure.

And welcome to the forums!

-- I dont think packs would be bad to go along with your starter tin. ( I reccomend priest and kings packs, thesaurus, and disciples. Those all have some good cards in them!) Just make sure you read though the deck building rules and you have an appropriate number of lost souls and dominants per deck. When I started out, I was especially interested in the tins. Those arent bad either because you can get a good variety of different cards in one tin.

-- Where to get cards/packs/etc... - I would check here under the Redemtion Market tag. Sometimes you will find good deals on people selling these things.

Alex, is Robert Morris in Pittsburgh? I haven't been here for very long, so I am not familiar with too much of Pittsburgh yet.

I appreciate the responses everyone! I'm going to be honest though that I have no idea what to make of the cards or what they do quite yet. I played maybe two games back in early high school. That is all I've got. The only thing I remember is that you need to save souls, lol.

It looks like I picked of a #15 RoA tin. It was the only one at the store, so... haha. I am waiting for my paypal payment to clear and then I will have my lion tin and thesaurus packs. The lion tin DOES come with the G/H deck right? That was my understanding but now I am nervous, lol.

The Lion tin comes with G/H, New Jerusalem, and 6 unlimited packs. There's like, 2 good things in unlimited packs, though the NJ and G/H makes the deal worth it, plus the tin is pretty nice for storage.

Phew, glad to be reassured that the tin I got was a fine call, lol. Also I forgot to mention before that I got a PM from _JM_. It seems like he is somewhat far out but also kind of near, but I hope to be able to get with someone who knows the game well. I am excited to play again for the first time in a few years. I should still have some cards at my parents' home in Cincinnati so someday I should have a little boost to my new collection.

Not to complain, but with some of the cards, reading the text can be a little frustrating depending on how badly the text blends into the image. Just a random, late-night thought. :P

Did u try using redemption live, westy gave you a link in his post, that site provides an info box on the right hand side of the screen tht should be very legible. It also helps you with identifiers.

I appreciate the sentiment, haha.

And I did see Westy's link, but I forgot about it. Is there a learn-to-play tutorial on there?

Unfortunately, no. I started working on a video tutorial awhile ago, but got busy with school. Maybe I'll get a chance to do it over spring break.

Cincinnati actually has an active playgroup (you could contact uthminister here on the boards) so you might also get to go to a tournament sometime when you're visiting your folks.
