So , I was attacked with Jacob, and COTH. (this was in multiplayer) "So , I said does anyone have anything to help me, if not He wins." So, My other opponent had the gates of hell out. I blocked with Gomer, TxP. He used The gates of hell and kept discarding the bottom card of his deck , so then I could band to his Evil Charactars. So, could he use the gates of hell, even though he was not part of this battle?

It says "At any time...", so yes, he can. However, if you blocked with Gomer before he did that, he would have to discard it to add the EC into battle. If he did it before, then the EC sits in his territory and you block with Gomer banded to his Orange guy and he keeps Gates.

No, he can't

read all. This makes me mad.

Eric was part right. If he had d/c with gates to bring an ec into territory that gomer could band to and then he had attacked with gomer, that would have been a legal play.
AS it was, I ruled (or would have ruled? I think this was the situation that came up for my quesiton on the previous thread) that GoH would have worked that way because as I read and understood it, that was how GoH worked. Evidently the PTB have discussed it and decided that you cannot add an EC to an Opponents side of the battle, only to your side of the battle (which I dont like but oh well)
so if he had done it before gomer was presented it woudl have been a legal play, if he had done it after gomer was presented it would have been an illegal play.
but either way, I ruled that GoH worked the way I thought it worked so either way, i would have ruled that it was a legal play.

I still haven't been PM'd a link to that discussion, so in my mind this case isn't closed quite yet.

I would love for it to not be closed because I would love to use this in t1-multi at Nats but I'm not holding my breath...

maybe its a figment of tims imagination. ;)

Lets hope so.

I hope it is ruled you can add the demon to battle. I am always in favor of special abilites working as they are worded on the card.
-
Regardless of the ruling, Gates of Hell will still work exactly as written, it's just that a rule might be enacted to restrict how it can be used. Even though a converted Gomer still says on the card that she can band with any male EC, a game rule restricts her from doing so.

Wait...What? Gomer cant band to any Male EC because of a game rule? what game rule?
-
if shes converted.

To use Gates of Hell to produce more ECs to band to is both legal and clever.
As long as GoH is used before Gomer is used to block, she can band to any male ECs in territory at the moment she enters battle. After she has entered battle, you cannot go back and use the ability later.

Yeah, I thinbk the contention here is whether they can d/c Gates to add an EC to a battle they are not personally involved in.

And I think the contention is exactly what the poster claimed:
He used The gates of hell and kept discarding the bottom card of his deck , so then I could band to his Evil Charactars.
I'm confused, my post almost exactly mirrors something you said yourself earlier in this thread, and you're telling me that's not what this is about.

I think there are two different contentions going on here. ;)
The original question mentioned bringing in Gomer and then having the opponent reveal with GoH until they found a demon to put in territory, and then banding that demon in with Gomer's ability. Even though GoH says "At any time," that does not include during the completion of an active SA. Gomer's SA must complete before GoH can activate. I'm pretty sure that's what Schaef was referring to.
The other contention deals with the last sentence of GoH, which could not be used unless the holder of GoH was blocking.

For clarification purposes, here is how I see the conversation as it has developed.
First claim was as you mentioned. Then that one kid liked a discusion thread on whether you could d/c Gates to add an EC to battle. (which I ruled you could ath this tournament) Since I remember ruling on that specific issue more than once at this tournament, I assumed that this was one of those situations. In fact I am pretty sure I did rule on this very disputre although I cannto remember the exact specifics.
Since they linked the other thread, that said to me that it was more than a simple banding issue and the only other way to get an EC into battle other than gomer banding to it would be to d/c Gates of hell.
Im just sayin that is how I have seent he conversation develop. I have been tryign to adress BOTH aspects of the issue.
you know, to be inclusive and cover all the bases.
