New Play Group

Hey guys, I'm going to be starting a new play group at my church within the next few weeks, and I needed a couple of ideas!  I have enough E/F starter decks to let everyone play with, so that all the new people can learn how to play the game without having to buy anything.  My problem is  I wanted to "reward" people for coming and participating, but yet I wanted to challenge them to "earn" the cards.  The reasoning is I want a way to see how commited they are to playing, because I want to develop people who will stay in this game, not just people who come and play a couple of weeks and I give them cards just to be thrown away later.  My only real idea right now is if they memorize the verse(s) on the bottom of the card I'd give them that card for free!  While I have no problem with this idea at the beginning, because the people who will be coming are from our church and I feel scripture memorization would benefit the "people in the church," I'm afraid that wouldn't be well received by any "non-christian" that was brought in by one of our current players.  So my biggest question is what other ideas do you have that I could challenge our youth/children to learn/study/memorize the bible but yet be able to bring in people who don't normally go to church?

P.S. If anybody has any extra cards laying around gathering dust that you want to get rid of let me know!  I don't have much cash or cards to trade for but I'll do my best!   :P

P.S. again:  I didn't know where to put this, so any moderator can move this to where ever they feel fit!

on earning cards you could let them ether memoize the verse or let them play X games for it.

you shouldn't rward them for "earning"
you should reward them just for coming cause kids these days are more intrested in darker more ungodly games like magic:the gathering, yugioh, dungeons and dragons and so on and so forth then intrested in the good games one of em being redemption

Sorry but I disagree about 9001% (yes thats over 9000). I'd try maybe a pack of cards for the books of the bible, the ten commandments, etc. Honestly, If you have surplus I'd give them the starters you play with because you never know when seeing a card might spark a memory and they may begin playing again (that happened with me)

Yeah, I'm planning on giving them all a full deck, it just depends on how many people I have to start, I might not have enough to give each one.  That is why I was going to start out with single cards!

I'd try maybe a pack of cards for the books of the bible, the ten commandments, etc.

I really like this idea, but I also need to be careful with how much money I use on this.  I'm married with a part-time job, and my wife is student teaching meaning she works 40 hours a week for free! (Which, by the way is the dumbest thing ever!)  So extra money is not something I have a lot of right now!

Maybe instead of scripture memorization for those who might not go to church, you can reward them for just reading about where the card comes from, and telling you a little about the story. So if they want to get an Uzzah, for example, the have to read about him and tell you a little bit about the story. That way, they don't have to do something that may be foreign to them (scripture memorization) but they do get more exposure to the Bible with something that is familiar to them (reading). Hopefully this will spark interest in the stories, and thus the Bible and Christianity in general. The problem with simply memorizing a verse if it's not something you've done regularly, is if that's what you tell them to do, that's what they'll do, but they may not look at the context of the verse. Without context, many verses on many cards can be confusing at worst and uninteresting at best.

Let me tell you a little bit about Nehushtan...
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

Exactly. I'd bet a lot of Redemption players don't even know about that story, even though almost everyone uses the card. I just think that reading stories is an easier way to get people interested than scripture memorization, though that should definitely be encouraged as people learn more about the word and hopefully want to experience it in deeper ways.
